Amid growing calls for higher education standards, a City Council member is urging the Department of Education to limit the amount of homework teachers assign students each night.

Peter Vallone Jr., who represents parts of Queens, said his two daughters are routinely swamped with homework and stuck at home, slogging through it.

"As a parent, I have been unable to have fun with my kids. We can't go for bike rides. We can't go to the park. We can't go to the museum, and that's not fair," he said.

He plans to introduce a resolution next month calling for homework in public schools to be limited to 2 1/2 hours a night and said he wants the Department of Education to create a weekly homework-free night.

What a jerk. Tell’em not to do their homework, to go play, and absolutely, don’t study. Then they can go get knocked up, have babies and live off society - that’ll be fun.

It's called "Time Management" Peter, look into it.

The guy’s totally right. No working adult would tolerate five hours worth of whatever he spends eight hours a day doing at his office having to be done at home at night.

I would have loved this guy in NYC when I was a little boy. Homework always ran over 3 hours and more for me.

What if it only takes my child ten minutes to do the work that takes Peter Vallone Jr.’s idiot kids two and a half hours to do? Which will be the standard?

The problem is that the teachers don’t teach during the day and to get federal funding they must meet test levels so the girls are having to teach themselves at night what the failed unionized school teachers are not doing.

Course from his comments I can see they are not into any sports since he does not seem to attend any games they are involved in.

Next thing you know, Peter Vallone Jr. will trip over his own shoelace and will introduce a bill to require publically funded shoelace re-tiers to work at every bus and subway stop, to keep the people safe...

Here’s the solution. Tell him to look at the curriculum of his local schools. Then ask him how much of this homework could be done in school if you cut some of the non-essentials such as multi-cultural sensitivity training out.

I think kids in government schools have too much home work too. School for 6hrs a day, 2-3hrs of homework? My homeschooled kids get their work done in 4hrs.. It’s a selling point to them when they complain.

Successful people work hard, accept more responsibility and get complain about the challenges they face. Hard working students will make successful adults.

Kids today have to compete with students from all over the world. They’d better study 2-3 hours a day if America is going to keep here economic advantage in the future.
And you aren’t going to get there watching SpongeBob Squarepants 3 hours a day.

I have to wonder about children having to spend hours on school work each night. Are they learning disabled? It seems a child needs a balanced life.....stress can effect a child as well.

Are you suggesting that we shield kids from stressful situations, so that they won't have any experience with dealing with stress by the time they become adults?

Absolutely, why not abolish it altogether? While we’re at it, we can shut down all the schools. Think of how much money taxpayers will save.
