Even metaphorical wars can have flesh-and-blood casualties, and hospitals around the country are now tending to the victims of one of our fiercest. It is not so much that we are losing this particular war; simple notions of victory and defeat dropped away some time ago. Rather, locked in a spiral of costly and controversial escalations, we may have lost sight of who the enemy actually is.

Okay, we have the New York Times publishing a review, in which illegal immigrants are compared to germs. Hmmm, what would happen to, say for example, Tom Tancredo, if he compared illegal immigrants to germs? Second, the NY Times believes that illegal immigrants are "uninvited, but necessary". Illegal immigrants are necessary in the world of the NY Times. No wonder they want open borders, welfare for illegals, give them drivers licenses and encourage them to vote. No wonder they smear as bigots anyone who doesn't agree with them. We just don't recognize the necessity of illegal immigrants. Necessary means we can't survive without them. Then anyone who opposes illegal immigration is putting our country at risk.
Whew, such is the "thinking" of The New York Times. And that's how the Times sees illegals and sees Americans. We all look like ants from 80 floors up.
The NY Times only sees future democratic voters.
No offense, but with unemployment at 4.5%, if you got your wish and could suddenly move these 9 million workers back south of the Rio Grande, you would wreck the economy.
This is the dirty little secret that every politician in DC knows, it's why the Border Patrol is not empowered to "fix" our porous border, and it's why the fence will slow the inward flow but not have any effect on those already in the USA.
George W. got creamed by both sides for trying to address this reality, but it's the truth, and we as a country can't handle the truth.
