Presidential Race: The war for the soul of the Republican Party was won in 1980 by Ronald Reagan. Presidential candidates who want to re-wage the conflict in 2008 will only weaken the GOP against the Democrats' nominee.
In the aftermath of Vietnam, Watergate and a Jimmy Carter presidency that rendered America an economic and foreign policy basket case, Republicans discovered a tried-and-true recipe for electoral success.
They would stand for three sets of principles:
Lowering high taxes and stemming the growth of government in order to revive the private economy, lower inflation and interest rates, and generate jobs.
Rebuilding U.S. defenses and unashamedly confronting Soviet expansionism with the goal of winning the Cold War rather than learning to live with communism.
Reasserting traditional values in the aftermath of the 1960s social revolution, including opposing abortion and smut, especially through the appointment of federal judges holding strict-constructionist views.
Overnight, the GOP was transformed. Losing the 1976 election with Gerald Ford as its standard bearer, it was a scandal-plagued "dime store Democrat" party, backing detente with an ever-more-aggressive Russia, imposing wage and price controls, and appointing to the Supreme Court liberals such as Roe v. Wade author Harry Blackmun and the high court's current most left-leaning member, John Paul Stevens.
Under candidate Reagan in 1980, it suddenly represented a vast cross-section of the country:
Beleaguered businesses, big and small alike (and those they employ).
Voters who feared the geopolitical consequences if America didn't soon take the "kick me" sign off its back, as the late Jeane Kirkpatrick so eloquently put it.
The legions of Catholics, evangelicals and others who deplored America's sinking into a Hollywood-inspired moral sewer.
More than a quarter-century later, sustaining the Reagan coalition remains the recipe for Republican victory in a national election.(continued)

Outstanding article. Maybe we should send a copy of this to Chris Wallace, Fred Barnes, et al.
FRED THOMPSON is absolutely the BEST candidate WE THE PEOPLE have had in many, many years.
I sense the tide is turning in Fred’s direction, don’t you?
Thanks, for the post. :)
Ping!
Bingo!
Yes, I believe you’re right.
You can count on Fred. He is the best thing to come along in a while. He takes on all issues without fear or polling. And he takes no crap. Just wait till he takes on the Hildabeast.
No no no. They don’t understand how it works. The liberal rinos refuse to budge from their disastrous losing policies and it’s the conservatives who believe in gun ownership, fiscal responsibility and the right to life who must give in or else, you know, Hillary will win and it’ll be real bad and stuff. And it’ll be the conservatives fault... not the fault of the Rinos who refuse, once again, to compromise one bit. Everyone knows that only a liberal babykilling gungrabber like Joolie or Mitt can beat Hillary. The country clubbers say so. So it’s gotta be true.
Go Fred go!
Fred(and we, his supporters) simply have had to wait out the “nattering nabobs of negativity”. Think of it like a test of the depth of our commitment. Fred’s commitment is not in question, we must live up to that standard.
“I sense the tide is turning in Freds direction, dont you?”
Yes I do! Fred’s support is growing with every day, and just wait until after the debate Wednesday night! Just hope that Anderson Cooper is fair enough to direct questions equally among the candidates, and not just toss them to Rudy and Mitt. I know Fred will do a great job in answering any questions asked of him. GO FRED!
You are right. Huckabee is another "born again" Carter.
The "nattering nabobs" only piss me off more and make me want to fight harder.
OMG, does someone have an extinguisher? He was just getting his mojo going, and now he’s burning up? :-)
Hey MOM...did you hear the Mark Levin interview?
Endorsed by Mark Levin? And if so, by Rush Limbaugh?
The interview was great! Mark Levin is soooooooooooo down to earth. Did you know he spent Thanksgiving with Rush.
My true enjoyment in FRED’s candidacy is that WE THE PEOPLE asked him to run. After much thought and reflection with great sacrifice to his family, he stepped up for us, WE THE PEOPLE.
WE THE PEOPLE must elect this very fine man. Can you just imagine the debate between FRED and Hillary? A Federalist vs a Socialist? WOW! That would be incredible! I have a so so heart...I might not make it through!
I missed it. It’s on here right at dinner/bedtime for my four kids.
Did he actually come out and endorse FRed? I knew he was leaning heavily toward him. I love Mark.
With all the Nay Saying lately, its been hard to not look down. So I sent FRED a few bucks again, got the bumper stickers on the trucks and then came Brit’s Fred is Dead show and Sunday Morning in FNC with FRED kicking butt, got me fired up for sure. Nothing like getting PO’d to put that fire in the belly.
From watching FRED on Sunday’s thrashing, he looks fired up too.
Be great to have this thing really catch fire between now and Primaries.
