The scare over global warming, and our politicians' response to it, is becoming ever more bizarre. On the one hand we have the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change coming up with yet another of its notoriously politicised reports, hyping up the scare by claiming that world surface temperatures have been higher in 11 of the past 12 years (1995-2006) than ever previously recorded.
This carefully ignores the latest US satellite figures showing temperatures having fallen since 1998, declining in 2007 to a 1983 level - not to mention the newly revised figures for US surface temperatures showing that the 1930s had four of the 10 warmest years of the past century, with the hottest year of all being not 1998, as was previously claimed, but 1934.
On the other hand, we had Gordon Brown last week, in his "first major speech on climate change", airily committing his own and future governments to achieving a 60 per cent reduction in carbon emissions by 2050 - which is rather like prime minister Salisbury at the end of Queen Victoria's reign trying to commit Winston Churchill's government to achieving some wholly impossible goal in the middle of the Second World War.
Mr Brown's only concrete proposal for reaching this absurd target seems to be his plan to ban plastic bags, whatever they have to do with global warming (while his government also plans a near-doubling of flights out of Heathrow).

I thought it seemed chilly. Where did I put my sweater?
Al gore is an idiot.
the reason ManBearPig CANNOT run again,He will be exposed on a national level....I can HOPE! But i think he would be forced into a debate he has so far avoided.
I don’t see what the problem is for Mr. Gore et al.
When I was in school back in the 70s, the threat was global cooling. What goes around comes around, there is no reason why the same folks concerned about global warming in 07 can’t flipflop again.

Ping me if you find one I've missed.
I know I must not have a very interesting life, but ever since this Global Warming charade was thrust upon us by the guy who invented the internet, I have done enough research to figure it for the joke it is. Every once in awhile I like to check out temps around the world to see if indeed we are heating up. In polar bear country, Iqaluit, Canada the average high temp and low temp for November are 16f for a high and 1f for a low. Right now it is a balmy -13f, which should make the polar bears happy, but seems below average to me. Then I look at the forecat high for the next ten days and see it will not get above 9f on any day. I guess the glaciers up north are safe for another year or so at least.
Algore and environmentalists crying everywhere. What a beautiful sight and sound.
Somebody should make up their mind. Global warming or global cooling? How am I supposed to know how to dress?
Interesting, but I did not see the temp readings (did I miss it somewhere?). Simply saying this year is cooler than 1998 (which was a very hot year) doesn’t mean its getting cooler year by year from 1998-2007 which is what this seems to imply (at least to me)
Anyone have the data? Thanks!
He is the new high priest of the ‘Branch Algorians’, a cult which sprang up after Janet Reno burned up Dacid Koresh and the sister cult the Branch Davidians. Too bad we can’t get Janet back at Justice to put Saint Al in his place.
I think the chill you feel is from Algore’s visit to the Oval Office today. Brrrr!
Yes, I would also love a link to the satellite data. I would probably add it to my e-mail return address!

CLIMATE CHANGE!
See, now you can cover heating AND cooling!

What I’m seeing here in Iowa is not global warming or cooling, but moderated extremes. Winters are warmer, but the summers are cooler. We aren’t having days on end of 100+ in the summer and below zero in the winter like we used to.
