Illegal immigrants not U.S. health care burden: study Mon Nov 26, 2007 4:14pm EST

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Illegal Latino immigrants do not cause a drag on the U.S. health care system as some critics have contended and in fact get less care than Latinos in the country legally, researchers said on Monday.

Such immigrants tend not to have a regular doctor or other health-care provider yet do not visit emergency rooms -- often a last resort in such cases -- with any more frequency than Latinos born in the United States, according to the report from the University of California's School of Public Health.

The finding from Alexander Ortega and colleagues at the school was based on a 2003 telephone survey of thousands of California residents, including 1,317 undocumented Mexicans, 2,851 citizens with Mexican immigrant parents, 271 undocumented Latinos from countries other than Mexico and 852 non-Mexican Latinos born in the United States.

About 8.4 million of the 10.3 million illegal aliens in the United States are Latino, of which 5.9 million are from Mexico, the report said.

"One recurrent theme in the debate over immigration has been the use of public services, including health care," Ortega's team wrote in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

"Proponents of restrictive policies have argued that immigrants overuse services, placing an unreasonable burden on the public. Despite a scarcity of well-designed research ... use of resources continues to be a part of the public debate," they said.

The researchers said illegal Mexican immigrants had 1.6 fewer visits to doctors over the course of a year than people born in the country to Mexican immigrants. Other undocumented Latinos had 2.1 fewer physician visits than their U.S.-born counterparts, they said.

I guess the illegal aliens I see going to the hospital after breaking their ankles jumping the fence in Calexico are just freakin’ figments of my imagination.

They are slightly misstating the question. Our concern is that those here after amnesty will over use the system. Many here now are afraid to go in. Yet, ....

... any more frequency than Latinos born in the United States

This indicates they are using it even now, an abuse of the system.

Ok, so several years ago when my son suffered a concussion we sat in the emergency room for NINE hours, yes I said NINE freakin’ hours and WHO was in that ER,,,,,,well let’s just say the dominant language was SPANISH and the ailments were nothing but sniffles, tummy aches and other assorted nonsense.....this particular ER also provided an interpreter for the 99.9 percent of the patients that could not speak English. AND I happened to be sitting near the desk where the patient was interviewed,,,what the ailment was, name, address, etc. AND 99.9 percent of the people in that ER did NOT have any kind of insurance........

Exactly. How does it determine illegals use of hospital resources? We aren't told.

Amazing how the numbers decrease,( or remain the same for 10 years) when trying to push an agenda

About 8.4 million of the 10.3 million illegal aliens in the United States are Latino, of which 5.9 million are from Mexico, the report said.

Yet, increase when trying to push an agenda - in 2004 it was approximated that 38 million were without health care, which Kerry & the Rats immediately rounded up to 42 million.

The Rats are now claiming that 47 million are without health care ( it'll be 50 million come election time. Nice round number).

Now, 'splain me how the number of uninsured continue to go up but the number of illegals gets reduced ?

A nurse told me that the emergency room lost 12 million dollars to illegals not paying their bill. This was a city of about 80,000. Wonder what the people that wrote the reporter were smoking.

Illegal Latino immigrants do not cause a drag on the U.S. health
care system as some critics have contended and in fact get less
care than Latinos in the country legally, researchers said on Monday.

These rearchers ain't doctors.
Including a fairly liberal one I know.
That immigrated legally from a Baltic state after the fall of the
USSR; graduated from USC Medical school.

This MD is modestly "left of center"...I think thanks largely to
the indoctrination program of the MSM.

But, after years of medical school and working in clinics around
Los Angeles, she did admit to me that "...in America, you get
healthcare, often GREAT healthcare, if you are rich or poor or illegal.
It's the middle-class American who pays for it and doesn't even
get part of a fair share."

These researchers should live in the areas of Los Angeles that have
lost ERs in the last decade or so.
Then they might wake up.

maybe ICE should hire these "researchers." they seem to be more capable of finding illegals than ICE is.

I live in LA. I’ve known several people who used emergency rooms in the last two years or so. The minimum wait time was seven hours. The longest, 18 hours.

These CLYMERS need to come on over to my hometown and see for themselves how illegals burden down the folk here with free medical assistance and free schooling for the anchor babies! Oh, I forgot, it doesn’t fit their agenda...never mind!
