States Assess Breakthrough On Stem Cells
Washington Post ^ | Thursday, November 22, 2007 | Rick Weiss

Posted on 11/24/2007 8:50:25 PM PST by Vince Ferrer

Tuesday's announcement that scientists had found a noncontroversial way to make cells equivalent to human embryonic stem cells did not just change the scientific and ethical landscape. It generated economic and geopolitical tremors through California, New York and about half a dozen other states that have invested -- in some cases heavily -- in embryonic stem cell programs and research centers.

You tax payers could be on the hook for Arnold's Folly. From the link...

California has the biggest statewide stake in embryonic stem cell research, with an aggressive commitment to spend $3 billion over 10 years to support facilities and studies. Already that pot of money has attracted scientific hotshots from other parts of the United States and abroad.

My sympathy for those making merchandise from the destruction of the lives of the innocents is nonexistent.

For the lay reader, here's a simple summary of the new methodology.

A somatic cell --a living skin cell will do nicely-- is treated with molecules which cause the turned potency off 'switches' within the genes to turn back to 'pluripotency on' as if the cell were a less differentiated stem cell with potential to turn into many tissue lines. Then scientists try to guide the pluripotent cell to turn into the more differentiated cells needed for particular treatments. When the embryo builds all the tissue lines of your body, at each stage of differentiation a process called methylation causes the step to be turned off after accomplished. The new process reverses the 'off switch' process.

Billions of dollars of borrowed money spent on a gesture of contempt for the moral position espoused by the President. Now it's a moot point.

I'll bet at least one state (you guess which) will press ahead with the original plan, just to show that they'll grid up babies whether they need to or not.

I would argue that it needed to be done, in order to create an alternative way to do things. Otherwise there would of been whining and complaining forever.

Now, it’s a moot point.

What they’re saying is that we get to pay for what now is not needed. The so-called scientists that have signed on to this abomination are not going to giveup willingly.

You tax payers could be on the hook for Arnold's Folly.

Are you not included in that group? What's your secret? ;-)

Arnold backing Prop 71 was one of his earliest horrendous acts. Not only did it commit $6 billion (including interest) of taxpayer dollars, but they amended the constitution to create a right to perform embryonic stem cell research and cloning. Totally absurd.

Well, since that state is in financial straights, it looks like they can save some money now, doesn’t it?

You have a clear idea of what this was all really about. They will, of course, continue funding embryonic research with other people's money, but the "high moral ground" is alread y lost.

Instead of posturing that they are being scientific and unencumbered by outdated ethics, and only looking for a cure, they will be seen for what they are.

Same phenomena as Global Warming...the "deniers" are the ones that won't face the fact that its not man thats responsible....and its not catastrophic!! No matter, we dolts (we are if we put up with it) will pay taxes to further both follies.

Al Gore couldn't fit in a Prius

It needed to be done because it was the moral thing to do.The whole episode was nothing more that political posturing. I would much rather be on the side of morality than that of rank political posturing because of my belief is the purity of abortion. This is what the argument was about. President Bush was and is correct. Those who got in a freezy to push ahead never want another way of doing their research. I am not speaking necessarily of the scientific community as a whole but of the leftist politics and world view. It is vile.

Doesn’t matter if it’s a bond issue.

If circumstances change substantially, they still don’t have to sell the bonds. They can choose NOT TO SPEND A DIME!

If an entire city is swallowed by a sinkhole, it means you can stop building that freeway to what is now nowhere.
