Scientist who ignited stem-cell war says it's over

The scientist who helped ignite cultural and political controversy with the use of embryos in stem-cell research believes his new discovery – using ordinary adult skin cells – means the war is virtually over.

"A decade from now, this will be just a funny historical footnote," James A. Thomson told the New York Times in an interview.

Thomson's laboratory at the University of Wisconsin was one of two that announced Tuesday a new way to turn ordinary human skin cells into what appear to be embryonic stem cells without using a human embryo.

The technique involves adding four genes to ordinary adult skin cells.

I can very reasonably argue that BECAUSE the President stood his ground, this recent break through became possible.

??? You suggesting they wouldn't have discovered this without his opposition?

And yet billions of dollars in taxpayer money have already been committed to the embryonic stem cell hoax in states like California. These programs should be repealed, or the funds re-directed to ethical, somatic stem cell research.

The Republican candidates should also be screaming to the housetops about the lies Democrats have told for years to obscure the reality of this issue.

Well I certainly wonder if they would. Why bother if they had "easy" access to embryos?

I agree. They have poured billions into a pipe dream that was really nothing more than another safeguard to protect abortion.

It’s sad to think of how much more progress would have been made if that money were spent on adult and umbilical cord stem cell research.

The discovery by JAMES THOMAS...?! He followed an established protocol by SHINYA YAMANAKA..!

A complete distortion.

Good news. Bush deserves credit in this fight.

I wonder if Planned Parenthood will start closing some of their death mills now that some of the potential profit will vanish.

They’ll continue to say it. Facts don’t impede their agenda one little bit.

For the same reason they discovered vinegars have cleaning uses?

IOW, you can be sure they testing more than skin cells for sources at this time.

It was an easy decision for any pro-life person to reach. And President Bush has ALWAYS been pro-life.

End of story, IMO.

The cells inside your mouth and on your tongue can heal in 48 hours or less from some small injury while the skin on your exposed body may take 10-15 days if not too large; why not get everybody to harvest their own oral cells and store them.

We could live forever - isn’t that what this is all about?

Excellent point. The pro-life community can thank President Bush and other conservatives for helping point science in the direction of alternatives to the "Embryos For Sale" idea.

Nope, it's killing babies that gets them off.

You may be right. But you can’t ignore that the embryo fight added to motivation. In the end it doesn’t matter why, it matters that an alternative was found. And the Pres stood up for what was right.

“Scientist who ignited stem-cell war says it’s over,”

Time to bring the scientist home, eh?

This is a real scientist who understands scientific ethical dilemmas.

The remark by this scientist that those who do not feel uncomfortable about using embryos for stem cell lines have “not thought about it long enough” shows honesty and integrity.

Such scientists need to be promoted in the public eye. We have so many frauds and charlatans such as Al Gore, we badly need to shine the media spotlight on the good guy scientists and encourage their example to young people everywhere.

I doubt his prediction that it is over. His mistake is in assuming that the war was about stem cell research, when in fact, the real reason for the war was the libs’ desire to create a wedge political issue. The fact that the battle is moot now won’t stop them from waging the war. They can make up facts faster than that. Afterall, if scientific relevance was the guiding force behind these scientific political movements, we would not be debating evolution or global warming.
