Rudy Giuliani was a brilliant can-do executive who transformed the fortunes of what was supposedly one of the most ungovernable cities in the nation. But on guns, abortion and almost every other social issue he's anathema to much of the party. Mike Huckabee is an impeccable social conservative but, fiscally speaking, favors big-government solutions with big-government price tags. Ron Paul has a long track record of sustained philosophically coherent support for small government but he's running as a neo-isolationist on war and foreign policy. John McCain believes in assertive American global leadership but he believes just as strongly in constitutional abominations like McCain-Feingold.
So if you're a pro-gun anti-abortion tough-on-crime victory-in-Iraq small-government Republican the 2008 selection is a tough call. Mitt Romney, the candidate whose (current) policies least offend the most people, happens to be a Mormon, which, if the media are to be believed...
Over on the Democratic side, meanwhile, they've got a woman, a black, a Hispanic, a preening metrosexual with an angled nape and they all think exactly the same. They remind me of "The Johnny Mathis Christmas Album," which Columbia used to re-release every year in a different sleeve: same old songs, new cover. When your ideas are identical, there's not a lot to argue about except biography.
The Democratic Party could use some seriously fresh thinking on any number of issues abortion, entitlements, racial preferences but the base doesn't want to hear, and no viable candidate is man enough (even Hillary) to stick it to 'em. I disagree profoundly with McCain and Giuliani, but there's something admirable about watching them run in explicit opposition to significant chunks of their base and standing their ground. Their message is: This is who I am. Take it or leave it.

As Rush has often said, the Democratic candidates CAN’T disclose to the American People what their true agenda is (Nanny-state socialism, redistribution of wealth, surrender in Iraq etc.) because they know that if they do, they won’t win the election.
Bang on target Mr Steyn!
If you're looking for someone to get tough with Elizabeth Edwards or RINO senators or White House travel-office flunkies, Hillary's your gal.
But tough on America's enemies? Thatcher-tough? Not a chance.
And again!
I love Steyn. But not even mentioning Fred at all in the piece leaves me puzzled.
Well, he left out Dodd and Biden, too.
First, never believe the ENEMEDIA!
Last, would be Mitt's religion. I cannot get past all his other flaws. He is good looking, for an old guy, and has nice hair. ;*)
Not a whisper about DUNCAN HUNTER!
Dodd and Biden, unlike Fred, aren’t top-tiers in their party.
Groan...I knew I forgot someone. I mean if he could mention Ron Paul surely he could have included Thompson and Hunter.
That’s what i was wondering. Eh, just a column. I still agree with the premise, I just wanted to see his actual thoughts on Fred and/or hunter.
bttt
Unfortunately, the old argument “united we stand, divided we fall” wins whereas a party of differences or splinters falls. Remember how galvanized we were under one idea, i.e., not let sKerry win but to win with the Pres. Bush who put forth the ideas that all of us could identify with and share—he had hero status. We need that one person but we DON’T have that person in sight. And (I hate to say this) that’s why the pubs will lose in ‘08. There’s not one candidate that has hero status.
Rudy, Romney, and even Huckabee have stolen the spotlight.
I hate to say it but Fred Thompson is sinking.
After all, doesn't the Extreme Right Wing (tm) control the party? Doesn't everyone have to think the same thing?
Are you kidding?
Where are the pro-life Democrats?
Where are the pro-gun Democrats?
Where are the pro-war Democrats? (a new one to add)
Where are the anti-illegal Democrats?
Where are the pro-drilling Democrats?
Where are the pro-smoking Democrats?
Where are the pro-business Democrats?
Where are the sensible environmental Democrats?
Take your pick of issues, and you'll find Republicans for both sides of them. Some have one or two little quirks, some are so far off the ranch that they've earned the RINO label (while a few have it unfairly thrust upon them).
Where are the DINOs? You have Joe Lieberman on the war. You have a few pro-lifers, who are never allowed to speak anywhere.

Hey Mark! ever hear of Fred Thompson?
In a way, Mark has highlighted Fred through ommision.
I hate to see him lumped in with all the panderers he discusses in this article.
...vote for Alan Keyes.
And, he didn't just adopt these positions the day before yesterday...
