Fred Thompson ....campaigning at a NH gun store..... told reporters Giuliani too often turns to his time as NYC mayor to explain his support for stronger gun restrictions. "....he was at bill-signing ceremonies with NY Sen Chuck Schumer and President Clinton and others for gun-control legislation over the years. Of course, he's not as outspoken about it any more."

Based on both your first-hand experience and the list of most productive ports in your post, you have great reasons to question the productivity and value of new yorkers. Even Jack Welch--one of the high priests of productivity--insults the quality of people in nyc:

Some new yorkers may make lots of money, but to Jack Welch, money's not the real measure of a person or a person's productivity. Based on his evaluation, Welch thinks most wall streeters just don't make the cut.

I was born and raised in NYC and lived there for 28 years. In fact, I’m in NYC right now, visiting my mother for Thanksgiving weekend.

I can’t stand NYC. Every time I am back here, I marvel at the sheer number of miserable people I see slogging through the streets. I talk to people who are miserable. They claim to rely on the ‘convenience’ of the city, while failing to recognize that the city is many times more inconvenient than anywhere else in the country. They say that they ‘couldn’t take the pay cut’ to move away, yet spend jawdroppingly ridiculous amounts of money to live what amounts to a pretty shabby lifestyle.

The city that I once knew, with neighborhoods full of friendly and slightly quirky people, is gone forever. This city is now a cesspool of nanny state micromanagement, crippling taxes, outrageous prices, inconveniences, and sheer misery.

I look forward moving my mother away from this city and this lunatic state, so I don’t ever have to come back here.

I doubt either one of us will look back.

I've lived in the New York City area for most of my life, and I can't stand the place. Even with all of the so-called "quality of life" improvements there in the last 15 years, I've never seen a place in the U.S. (or Canada) where such chaos and disorder are the norm.

Here's a pretty startling statistic for y'all:

In New York City alone, UPS paid $18.7 million and FedEx paid $8.2 million in fines for parking violations during the 2005-06 fiscal year.

Just think about that for a moment.
