Preliminary charges filed against Chirac

PARIS - Alleged wrongdoing in Jacques Chirac's past came back Wednesday to trouble his retirement, when a judge took the unprecedented step of filing preliminary embezzlement charges against the former two-term president of France.

Chirac insisted he had committed no wrongdoing. Political opinion was divided on whether the judge had scored a victory for French justice or merely underscored its impotence — because only since he left office in May have judges been able to pursue Chirac.

Since he lost his presidential immunity, Chirac has now been questioned by two different judges looking into suspected misuse of public money and other alleged wrongdoing in his 18-year tenure as mayor of Paris, which served as one of his springboards for the presidency in 1995.

The judge that summoned him to her office Wednesday, Xaviere Simeoni, is investigating whether people in Chirac's circle were given sham jobs as advisers, paid by Paris City Hall even though they weren't working for it.

The respected daily Le Monde said Chirac specifically is suspected, as Paris mayor, of having hired a chauffeur in 1990 who later told investigators that he in fact had worked for a senator in Chirac's political party.

Chirac was mayor of Paris from 1977-95 and president of France from 1995 until May 16 this year.

Chauffeurs, payroll padding, ghost workers.......all is beanbag.

Chirac will beat all this petty stuff and end up with a fine and 3 years of mandatory wine-tasting and can-can watching at Maxim's.

The current investigation is merely diversionary tactics to cover up not going after him for the real McCoix which is the multimillion Oil for Food criminal scandal, money laundering and assorted other U.N./France/Chirac/Kofi/Kofi Jr. confidence games.

No doubt, isn’t that the norm in a skiffy cut-rate socialist government? No penalty for slacking, no incentive to work harder, what do they think is going to happen? In socialism, much like the haunts of the liberals, you get a high position by knowing somebody. Merit, integrity, and work ethic need not apply.

Chirac should be hanged for his crimes and then sent to the Hague for trial...

Our government should hold Chirac responsible for OIF. Had he not been a Saddam facilitator, the entire operation might not have been necessary.

Yes! Chirac’s as crooked as they come. Intolerable, even for the French.

Sark is a HUGE improvement.

Meanwhile his wife just endorsed Hillary. Corruption seems to follow those people like hungry kittens.

That’s precisely the first thought that came to my mind when I read that Chirac’s wife was endorsing Hillary.

So not only do they have that whole Socialist thing in common...they’re both as crooked as the day is long.

She started her endorsement of Mrs. Clinton back in 2003:

This just in from la belle France

T he Hillary has her first foreign endorsement. Clinton's disavowal, in what looks like a bad translation from what she said into French and back into English, is that "I don't have the intention to run" for President. Uh-huh.

It is refreshing to know that, if she should grace us with the pleasure of a run for the Presidency in 2008, she will at least have the grateful and gracious support of the Mme Chirac. From an AP story as carried by the Guardian: (snip)
