This might be to much of a downer for your kids, but if you have a non profit hospice house that serves all regardless of their ability to pay for the service, that would be a good place to donate to.

My favorite is Make a Wish.

It is a healing salve to the torture and hopelessness of the human spirit in dying children.

How about the Republican candidate of your choice?

Not tax deductible, but a conservative in the White House will save more lives and do more good than almost any charity. Or your local church.

My church gets 10% already, so

Fred08.com

would be my choice.

Salvation Army or food to local food banks.

Also, it’s cold out side for the bell ringers too. Make sure they are warm and fed too.

Lutheran World Relief is one of the best I've found. Over 92% of their funds go to their charitable works.

Here's a link to Charity Navigator's Rating of them. This is a good site to evaluate charities.

They are always quick to respond to world disasters, such as the cyclone in Bangladesh.

Mrs. Tick and I are looking for worthy charities, as well — thanks for starting this thread.

In particular we’d like to find some good ones that help out our military folks.

SandRat posted yesterday regarding a group that builds housing for disabled soldiers. That one looks pretty good:

Any advice y’all have on others would be greatly appreciated.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. We have SO much to be thankful for!

Saint Vincent De Paul society. They help everyone and now have a pharmacy for those who can’t afford their medication.

They have been helping a little Iraqi boy who was doused with gasoline and set on fire by random crazies. CNN has chronicled the families story and are very moving. Unfortunately, they usually stick the typical CNN bias in the stories, but at least they have brought attention to this brave family.

George Costanza’s “People Fund”. On a more serious note, Make a Wish, Salvation Army, Saint Vincent de Paul-— all sound like worthy charities.

The Boy Scouts of America. Give directly to your local council...not through the United Way!

When I was a child, probably about 10 years old or so, something happened at Christmas that I have never forgotten. My folks were charter members of a church and back in those day, everyone pitched in and did what needed doing so one Sunday, when my dad was walking by the church office and the phone was ringing, he answered it. It was someone who knew of an elderly couple who had no food .... and certainly no food for Christmas. They were trying to find someone, anyone, who could help them and had called our church to see if the church could help. Rather than pass on the problem, my dad talked to my mom and after church, we went grocery shopping. He had gotten the address of the elderly folks and we went to their house which was in a run-down part of town. I can still remember walking up the steps to their door with my folks carrying the grocery bags. I can still remember the look on the faces of the elderly couple as out of "nowhere" appeared the answer to their prayers ... food. Mom and dad had gotten them a small turkey and all the fixins and included some 'staple' items to tide them over for a while.

My point, I guess, is that I have given money to many charities and growing up, I was expected to allocate part of my allowance to church and charities, but nothing made such an impact as actually DOING something hands-on. It's been a long, long, long time since I was 10, but I still remember what my folks did (despite their own somewhat meager circumstances) like it was yesterday and my activities today are still being influenced by the tremendous lesson they taught by showing me and my brothers the true meaning of Christmas with their generosity, compassion, and love for their fellow man. By the way, I commend your efforts with your kids, whatever you end up doing ...... you're walking the walk', not just 'talking the talk'.

As I recall, The Salvation Army is one of the most efficient charities. It’s easy to see why.

This year, I would recommend that people only donate to our Veterans recovery. I know others need it also but our Veterans give their all so that we actually have the ability to donate.

I do have to say that Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson’s nonprofit organization BOND, the Brotherhood Organization of A New Destiny, is doing amazing work “Rebuilding the Family By Rebuilding the Man”, improving race relations with straight up honesty, and taking on the race hustlers like Sharpton, Jackson, and the NAACP. www.bondinfo.org. BOND is known for its Home for Boys, After School Character Building Program, Entrepreneur Program, mentoring, counseling, and more.
