DeLay Knocks GOP: "The leadership just isn't getting it"
examiner.com ^ | 11/20/07 | Jeff Dufour and Patrick Gavin

Posted on 11/20/2007 1:51:03 PM PST by StatenIsland

Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay may not be in a leadership position on Capitol Hill anymore, but that doesn't mean he can't weigh in on the current GOP leadership.

DeLay told Yeas & Nays that Republicans in Congress are "looking for something to believe in" and "they're not getting it out of this Republican leadership. … The leadership just isn't getting it."

"They're looking for some backbone," said DeLay, who also chimed in on the 2008 election. He said the Republican party is "going to get our clocks cleaned in 2008" and unequivocally said that "Hillary [Clinton] will be the next president."

DeLay gave us is his dour assessment at a book party for former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, which was held at the Georgetown home of former Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman. The party was a virtual "who's who" of the conservative movement: Lynne Cheney, Liz Cheney Perry, Scooter Libby, David Keene, Vin Weber, Grover Norquist, Barbara Comstock, Armstrong Williams, Mary Matalin, Ramesh Ponnuru, John Fund, Byron York and Kate O'Beirne.

But, lest you think that The Hammer is about to start playing for the other team, he did poke fun at New York Times columnist -- and favorite conservative punching bag -- Paul Krugman: "I'd like to bitch-slap him." DeLay also ruled out another stab at politics, even if GOP fortunes reverse: "I'm 60 years old, I'm through."

Elsewhere around the party: Mehlman called Bolton "the Atticus Finch of the United Nations." Mehlman said he sees similarities between the Finch character in "To Kill A Mockingbird" and the famously pugnacious Bolton, praising Bolton for always "earnestly making his case." Bolton kept his remarks brief, but did end with a rallying call for conservatives: "I sure hope we win next year."

That was a reverse NJ manipulation. I don’t blame Delay in the least.

"Say what you must about Rudy - I disagree with him on many issues, too - but the country can survive the Presidency of ANY of the Republican candidates (except Paul), but it cannot survive Democrat control of both Congress and the White House."

Totally disagree with you on this issue.

The nation, much less our beloved GOP, will not withstand Rudy being nominated.

Rudy is the one GOP Presidential Candidate who guarantees a Hillary Presidency because of his extremely excessive Liberal baggage.

If he is nominated, Hillary and the MSM will 'Let loose the dogs of war' and will beat Rudy over the head with his own history until he cries.

And yes, you are in denial.

By the way, Delay is not advocating despair, he has started a new organization proposing local conservative activism. See this thread: “http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1927190/posts

Delay showed lots of backbone when he bailed. He needs to shut up and sit down. He had his turn and lost it.

This is the same Tom Delay who was a willing participant in Republican sponsored givaways like prescription drug entitlements and an unprecedented increase in pork barrel spending. Mr. Delay, don't go away mad, just go away.

Fast to criticize but lacking in what needs to be done. All smoke and no fire, just like a Democrat.

DeLay and Newt didn’t help the cause, so I would prefer if they kept their comments to themselves.

I have bucket full of what they left us. Since you do not know me I dare say you are not qualified to make a call on my credentials. Since it is a government for the people by the people I would say about 50% of Americans ( the intelligent ones ) qualify to do their job according to the constitution.

I do know that they both screwed up ( one personally and one professionally )at a critical time and bailed at inopportune times and left the party in the lurch. That kind of evens out the good they did.

“The GOP deserves to be bashed. It stands for nothing, right now, and there is indeed a leadership void. The sad thing is that they do have an opportunity to take back the House next year, but they’ll botch it. I think this party is headed for the wilderness again, thanks to the mush-headed moderates trying to control the party.”

Bullseye! The GOP leadership has become a bunch of little girls, unwilling to defend themselves or their base and incapable of articulating solid, basic principles. Add to this the fact they totally ignore their base and you get a recipe for defeat.

Apparently the American people need to be beaten into the ground by Socialism before they wake up.

I believe he may be right. But I will do my duty and vote, and anything else I can do to make sure a real Rep. gets into office.

DeLay Declares 'Victory' In War On Budget Fat
House Majority Leader Tom DeLay said yesterday that Republicans have done so well in cutting spending that he declared an "ongoing victory," and said there is simply no fat left to cut in the federal budget.
DeLay attacking the Republican leadership for being clueless is like Rosie O'Donnell attacking Michael Moore for being obese.

We may not like the messinger in De Lay, but smart Republicans better heed his comments. DeLay learned too late to save his career. But his advice should not be ignored.

I have to agree with you. I don’t think they understand just how much the party’s core despises the various government expansions (No Child Left Behind, prescription drug benefit, earmarks, etc) and the illegal immigration amnesty. Perhaps they are right, though. Perhaps they are only going where they think the votes are? Are conservative Americans still in the majority? I have to wonder.

The American people won’t be able to do anything if they end up as a minority, thanks to continuous future waves of illegal immigrants coming into the U.S. and also being allowed to vote in all future U.S. elections, thanks to Democratic legislation which will allow illegals to vote in all future U.S. elections. If the Democrats do control everything important starting in January ‘09, then socialism takes over the U.S. for the long-term, and both the Republican Party and all of conservatism will eventually die. The Democrats in power will truly do all that they can do to retain their political power for the long-term! The U.S. will become a third world country with no way to reverse itself if the Democrats completely take over everything important, starting in ‘09! Prove me wrong on all of this.
