Top conservatives have joined ranking House leaders in their bid to pressure the president to pardon two Border Patrol agents ...........
......... 31 major conservative petitioners joined a campaign led by Rep. Duncan Hunter, California Republican and presidential candidate, asking President Bush to pardon Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean before Thanksgiving........
"History has proven that the mere words and deeds of a president can change the course of history and profoundly affect both the tone and direction of the nation's moral character for generations to come," said the letter signed by 31 petitioners, mostly from Christian conservative groups and national-security organizations.
"The impact of a president's silence can have the same dramatic and devastating results. That is why we find your continued silence on the issue of a presidential pardon for Border Patrol agents Ramos and Compean of great concern," ...........
The letter is one of more than a dozen attempts including a petition signed by nearly 400,000 people across the nation to reach the president. Mr. Hunter hand-delivered a similar letter to the president on Friday.
Some of the first signatures on the long list are conservative stalwarts Paul Weyrich of the Free Congress Foundation, David Keene of the American Conservative Union and Morton Blackwell of the Leadership Institute. Others include former Reagan administration official Frank Gaffney of the Center for Security Policy ..... activist Phyllis Schlafly of the Eagle Forum.
The signers say they "find it unacceptable that some disillusioned Americans are being forced to conclude that the lives of Ramos and Compean are simply what the government has deemed an acceptable level of 'collateral damage' for a failed border security and national immigration policy." .
Federal authorities, however, denied that Mr. Aldrete-Davila had entered the U.S. under federal escort several times for medical treatment.

Sure, Aldrete is an illegal alien drug dealer and should be in jail. Sure Johnny Sutton treated Aldrete with kid gloves. But it all boils down to the fact that the agents committed crimes.
However, I think their sentences are a little harsh. Compean and Ramos should be credited for time served and released.
Not a chance. If Bush was gonna do something, he would have a long time ago.
If he can pardon the turkeys, why can’t he pardon our agents, who were trying to enforce our laws and secure our borders?
Maybe a communtation of the sentence in a year, but no pardon.
Two law enforcement officers fired shots, then tried to cover it up, and also attempted to convince others to help them - thats Conspiracy.
We cannot tolerate LEO’s doing this under ANY circumstances.
Pardon or commute the sentences. Just free them.
The prosecutor witheld the fact that Davila was up on drug smuggling charges, again, and therefor not credible. Sutton knew he couldn’t get a conviction if the jury had all the facts.
‘Sure, Aldrete is an illegal alien drug dealer and should be in jail. Sure Johnny Sutton treated Aldrete with kid gloves. But it all boils down to the fact that the agents committed crimes.
However, I think their sentences are a little harsh.’
Same view here. If the Bush Administrations insane border security/Amnesty point of view wasn’t a topic when they did this, 90% of the FReepers would want them to remain in jail for decades for what they tried to do.
The President can’t credit them for time served. He only has the authority to grant pardons. They also did not file a false report. They only gave a verbal report and did not file the written one.
Instead of appealing directly to Bush, the appeal should be made to the Mexican government. Bush will do whatever he is told by the Mexicans.
Because our law-enforcement people don't get to commit crimes.
Jorge will never lift a finger. They will have to wait for the next republican president. What the hells the matter with him?
Not entirely correct. In addition to pardons, the president can issue commutations - in effect, he could reduce the sentence to time served, and release them from prison without a full pardon.
Please review Art II Sec. 2 of the Constitution: "...and he shall have power to Grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.
Yeah, Bush can pardon two turkeys, but cannot find the time to consider our border guards.
Keep up the kid glove treatment of criminals. I don’t suppose you have heard the recording of the 61 year old who shot 2 perps who were breaking into a neighbors house. This is a direct result of citizens who are fed up with their “brain dead” government coddling criminals and illegals.
Wake up. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/5309288.html
Incorrect. The president can commute a sentence, as he did with Scooter Libby.
Guy, you are extremely naive to believe everything Johnny Sutton says. You shouldn’t believe anything Johnny Sutton says. They were railroaded by a corrupt U.S. attorney and convicted on the testimony of a scumbag drug dealer.
I don't want criminals treated with kid gloves. Nor do I want Law Enforcement Officers who break the law, and thus become criminals themselves to be treated with kid gloves.
Ok so now I'm the problem. Terrific. You must be a democrat, because this thread is only 5 or so minutes old and you have already chimed in with insults.
I think everyone who crosses the border illegally should be shot illegally in the arse*
‘Ok so now I’m the problem. Terrific. You must be a democrat, because this thread is only 5 or so minutes old and you have already chimed in with insults.’
Yep. Your the problem, I’m the problem, Suttons the problem.
Not the two LEO’s that fired shots, and tried to cover it up, nope not those two sweet angels....(eyes rolling)
I can’t believe how anger at the Administrations failures with border security and pushing Amnesty have made these two idiots ‘hero’s’ to so many conservatives.
Used to be when you had two bad LEO’s, Conservatives led the charge to get them off the taxpayer’s dime, and into prison.
What a long strange trip its become......
