Democrats angered at the image of country and western as Right-wing redneck music are planning a tour of Middle America during the 2008 election campaign by Nashville artists opposed to the Iraq war.
An alliance called the Music Row Democrats is poised to re-launch itself early next year in an attempt to seize back country music from the Republican camp and spread their message that President George W. Bushs party does not care about ordinary people.
Slowly but surely, more country singers are performing songs critical of the Bush administration. Merle Haggard, who once sang the anti-hippie anthem Okie from Muskogee for President Richard Nixon at the White House has even penned a tribute to Hillary Clinton.
In his Hillary", dedicated to the Democratic front runner, Haggard sings: This country needs to be honest/ Changes need to be large/ Something like a big switch of gender/ Let's put a woman in charge."
Pro-war songs like Toby Keith's "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue" and American Solider, and Darryl Worley's "Have You Forgotten (About Bin Laden)?" still dominate country music stations.
But some country stars such as Tim McGraw who has said he may run for Tennessee governor have come out as Democrats.
Republican Blues, by the bluegrass artist Tim OBrien, dealt with issues ranging from domestic spying by the US government to the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
Music Row Democrats was first formed in 2004, after the Dixie Chicks were boycotted and banned from country radio stations when their lead singer Natalie Maines said just before the Iraq invasion that she was ashamed Mr Bush was from her native Texas.
It now boasts more than 1,300 members in Nashville, the home of country music.

What’s the story with Faith being ‘shunned’ by her home state? i didnt hear about that one....
I thought they sang about trucks, prison, and getting drunk.
I got it...so did Waylon Jennings son Shooter who titled
his album “Put the O Back In Country”
heh.. that’s funny right there. :)
“I thought they sang about trucks, prison, and getting drunk.”
Yeah, that too. Point being???
How many of these Country music stars have performed in Iraq? I bet none come close to the number of times Toby Keith has been there. Also, if they don’t hurry up with their anti-war theme, the war will be over. How can the Democrats cashin on public dismay over the war if the public finds out we’ve won?
OK, vote for my wife then. I don't think she'd stand up and tell you she has any particular qualifications for the job. But then, at least she's honest - and Hillary has a rap sheet as long as your arm, and no real qualifications for the job, either.
Country meets rap: Save a horse, ride a cowboy, y’all
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Country-rap
“Country-rap is the addition of country music influences under hip hop music-style rapping. The style is known by several other names, such as “hick hop,” “hill hop,” “hip hopry,” and “country hip hop”...Toby Keith has released two songs which are considered country rap: “Getcha Some” (1998) and “I Wanna Talk About Me” (2001).
Where else can you get the lyrical line, “have you forgotten...about Bin Laden”
Unfortunately, the dead traditionally vote Democrat.
Big and Rich ping.
Cowboy Troy is another example of hick hop...and the lyrics are clean!!!!
LOL! I’m actually not as much of a fan of the genre crossovers like Cowboy Troy or Big And Rich - but The Nappy Roots are pretty enjoyable.

I will never apologize (we will)
I will never make amends (we will
We’d like to sell some tickets in our own country again)
I’m here to say that there is no God
And I support the radical Islamic jihad
Maybe you’ll say that I’ve been goin’ beserk-a
But I think every woman should be wearing a burqa
yes and I wonder if CW McCall’s Convoy could qualify as
rap? It’s narrated rather than sung (other than the
chorus)
Most country music Democrats (like Toby Keith) are like the old Democrats. Not the nit-wit leftists that have taken over the party. There is a difference between not being gung ho about a war and not supporting the troops.
What about “Hot Rod Lincoln” by Commander Cody, that could be considered one of the first “rap” songs.
I just wanted to mention that as much as everyone always likes "Devil Went Down to Georgia" my favorite of his is "Legend of Wooley Swamp"
Wasn’t Nanci Griffin more of a folk than a country singer?
