JACKSON, Miss. -- More than 500,000 people in Mississippi struggled with hunger in 2006, making the state the hungriest in the nation, according to a federal report.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture report released last week ranked Mississippi as the worst in the country, followed by New Mexico, Texas and South Carolina.
The report stated 18.1 percent of Mississippi's households faced hunger in 2006, up from 16.5 percent
in 2005.
Warren Yoder, the executive director of the Public Policy Center of Mississippi, said the numbers are "really bad -- astonishingly bad. "
The increase in Mississippi, the nation's poorest state, is being blamed on rising energy costs, which also affect food and other prices, experts said.
The Mississippi Food Network distributes food to about 80,000 clients in the state each month. Walker Satterwhite, the executive director of the Mississippi Food Network, said that figure has increased 15 percent since 2004.
Satterwhite said some of the increase is because of Hurricane Katrina.
Seems to me I remember Mississippi also among the nations highest states in charitable giving. I’ll check on that though.
Hillary's comments soon to follow...
Maybe they’re fat because they’re so hungry. LOL
By the way they create these statistics, that makes ME a “victim of hunger” (in GA) for ALL of this year.
One criteria: If you have EVER “felt hungry”. or “FEEL like you might become hungry” or “worry about being hungry” as a child, or have a child and “worry” about them being hungry - at eny time in the previous year - you count as a statistic under their definitions.
How do we define hunger. I’m hungry right now but I have to get up to go get food, I’m struggling with hunger right now.
Most likely when they do eat its probably fast food or something fattening out of neighboring New Orleans
We are the fattest nation on earth.
I hope before one pound of our aid goes out to another turd world country, we fill all our pantries and keep them that way
THIS IS A LIE!!!!! Anyone going hungry in Mississippi is lying. Too many charities and food banks etc. Our unemployed and disabled are the fattest in the Nation.

Well then I guess my family would rank as one of the hungry. My kids are always hungry and worry about being hungry shortly after eating a huge meal, and I spend a fortune on groceries every week.
It’s my perception that the United States does try to live by that yardstick. If our citizens can’t feed themselves, there are safety nets out there. Beyond what already takes place, I’m not convinced it would be productive to increase what we already do. There would be no incentive to produce for yourself beyond a certain point.
Hunger in America is a myth.
“The USDA uses the term “food insecure” to describe households not able to afford an adequate diet at all times within the past year. State numbers are measured using a three-year average. The report was compiled using numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau.”
They use #s from the Census Bureau and we are supposed to take this seriously?????
Reason #23 why God created Waffle House.

“Mississippi ranked fattest state in 2007”
...or How to See the Difference Between the Haves and the Have-Nots in Some States? That’s some weird news.
I thought we were ranked the “FATTEST” State in the Nation.
Makes no sense to me. How can it be both ways?
It’s not the contradiction that it seems to be. Poor people eat very fattening food to be filled up, but it offers very little nutrition, so the hunger impulse doesn’t go away.
The PETA-philes running the newsmedia are full of cr@p: Hamburgers aren’t that fattening. MAYONNAISE is what’s fattening. I was into my 30s before I ever saw anyone PUT Mayonniase on their own burger. But the chains all presume to put it on for you. Ever wonder why fast-food places put so much mayonnaise on their burgers? It gives their customers the feel of having eaten a good meal... But three hours later, their lack of nutrition has them craving food again.
High quality nutrition is expensive. Try eating lean meats and vegetables and scrounging up 600 calories for lunch. It’ll cost you several dollars, even at McDonald’s. OTOH, try a double cheeseburger. (Again, why does McDonald charge LESS for a double cheeseburger than for a normal-sized hamburger withOUT cheese?) 99 cents.
I;m not ragging on McDonald’s. They’re feeding America’s poor. I’m just saying why poor people are so fat.
