I had heard bit and pieces about this movie but never really looked into it until warned about it in my church bulletin yesterday. Our kids are big LOTR and Narnia fans so hopefully we can avoid the previews.

Well, my children are secure enough that a movie will not send them down the dark road.

Some will see it and some will not.

To each their own.

I guess it is good that I have no idea what this is about.

Don't care to know either.

I went to the web site and wasn’t particularly impressed with the concept they were trying to sell there.

When they propose you (children) have to link up with the sprite (forget if this is the right word for it or not) of your choice, they lost my support.

It’s one thing to have a character that kids admire in a movie. It’s another to sell them on the idea that they can’t fluorish/survive without that entity.

I hope everyone here at FR has learn more damage can be done to a film you disapprove of by not showing up for it than to become some news magazines “kook of the week” at a theater protest.
Just quietly kill it with your word of mouth, make sure you watch for the name Deborah Forte the producer( because they are the ones that have financially backed it) and not buy or rent her stuff again.

At some point hollywood will learn or the investment groups behind them that creating hostile entertainment against Christians is a losing business. These people only understand box office. DONT publically protest it and start a buzz about the film.

“Our kids are big LOTR and Narnia fans so hopefully we can avoid
the previews.”

The previews/trailers for “The Golden Compass” might be a good
“teachable moment”.
From what little I’ve seen, it looks like “The Golden Compass” is
just work of a faker (director) hoping to hitch his DERIVATIVE
work to the tail of Narnia.

And hoping that will get them plenty of $$$ at the box office.

I've read the first two books and half of the third. Pullman is selling poisoned candy, marketed to children and pre-teens.

The message of the books is that God is actually a petty, jealous Power who is deliberately stunting the potential of Man, so that he can remain an uber-dictator for eternity. The only solution is to rebel against God and kill him, thus freeing the omnipotence of Man to do whatever he wants.

Lord of the Rings and the Narnia books are both overtly Christian books, written by Oxford Dons who were trying to convey Christian ideas and ideals largely without mentioning any specific religious names or history. They were part of a group that called themselves the Inklings. There is a fairly large body of evidence (including her own statements) that J. K. Rowling was trying to continue that tradition with the Harry Potter books.

The guy who wrote these books is an anti-Inkling, trying to tear down Christian ideas and ideals and specifically intending to bring about the downfall of any Christian church, but most specifically the Catholic church, as I understand it.

Ted Baehr has a great review out on it called "An atheist's 'Narnia' knockoff."

On Dec. 7, 2007, the movie "The Golden Compass," based on the first book in the fantasy trilogy entitled "His Dark Materials" by atheist Philip Pullman will be released in theaters throughout the world. Pullman wrote his fantasy trilogy because he was so upset by the Christian evangelism of C.S. Lewis in his wonderful series of Christian tales entitled "The Chronicles Of Narnia." Pullman is an avowed atheist who has dedicated his life to undermining Christianity and the Church among young readers. The film's release is only another example of a culture spiraling away from faith, a culture into which we must step in and declare truth.

Pullman represents God as a decrepit and perverse angel in his novels, who captures the dead in a "prison camp" afterlife.

I use to pre-read all of my children's books, had one who read constantly so I have read many of the most popular ones.

"Golden Compass" was the only children's book I ever threw away!

Where "Narnia" is a Christian allegory, "The Golden Compass" is a satanic allagory with the kids following the beautiful angel that God threw out of heaven because of his jealousy of his beauty, and the kids have their own demon(daemon) sidekicks. Just sick.

Before you think I would be horribly picky about everything my kids read, they loved Harry Potter series, though I did use it as a teaching tool;-)

They're so dumb that they don't even know that they can't "kill God."

But they'd better watch out about what God is capable of...
