You mean your values.

That’s called indoctrination, or brain-washing, even if well-intended.

It’s a legitimate question. You can’t unring a bell. Some things aren’t appropriate for children, no matter the well intentioned plans of the adult. Perhaps you disgree, but that’s how I see it.

that would be like exposing kids to soviet propaganda films in order for them to defend capitalism.

I agree. However, you deal with your kids, I'll deal with mine.

I don’t have a problem with that, but if you’re going to bring up your views on a public forum don’t be surprised if others bring up their views.

My thoughts exactly. If your faith is so weak that a mere movie can threaten it... you’ve got other issues

Refusing to see it isn't so much about shaky faith as it is not wanting to put dollars into Pullman's pocket. I read the first two books and didn't need to read further to know the road he'd paved (not bothering with good intentions, either).

A friend of mine is in England working on the next Narnia movie. I'd rather contribute to his salary.

being against indoctrination is also a moral value.

Discussion of the movie after seeing it is what a good parent would do. I agree with your outlook completely.

Why would that be a bad thing ? Kids that don’t have reasons behind their beliefs are the biggest suckers later in life. If they only ever see one viewpoint on Capitalism, they will not invest any thought in that viewpoint, can’t defend it later, and are suckered into Communism. Kids SHOULD be exposed to Communist propaganda films, then asked to critique them until they see where the lies are.

Did you think Communists in America were all raised Communist ? No, they were raised Capitalists, but nobody ever bothered to explore with them why Capitalism is good and Communism bad. At most, information about Communism was treated as forbidden fruit, or only the bad aspects of Communism were discussed — the “free stuff” aspect of Communism being superficially a “good thing”. Kids should be raised to be critical thinkers, and they can’t do that if they are never exposed to what other people believe.

How so ? Do you have an example of how indoctrination, the unquestioning belief in something, is ever a good thing for the indoctrinee ?

I think the problem is you fail to see the difference between a propaganda film and exposure to the ideology, like Das kapital for example. A propaganda film sidetracks the mind by appealing directly to emotion. That’s why it is so effective. When kids are watching it in a movie theater, they are not able to ask the tough questions.

Sounds like you have actually read the books. If so, I would like to ask you...I purchased the trilogy to read to my 8 yr old daughter. Two years ago we read the full Narnia collection. Last year we read all of Lemeny Snicket. Both perfectly appropriate and my daughter loved them. But I am considering returning Pullmans books, not because I would not read them myself, but as a Christain, I dont want to encourage anti-Christain philosophies in my daughter. I have seen the recent publicity. Is it much to do over nothing, or are the books really bad examples for young minds?

Not at all. You have to be exposed in the same fashion as the indoctrinees would be exposed. Watching someone else critique something does not engage the mind the same way. You have to have been sucked in, then find that you can’t defend the position logically. Then you really understand how somebody else could be suckered.

well if a kid hits someone because he thinks the other person is just an arbitrary collection of chemicals, the parent should punish the kid and not have a philosophical “discussion.”

The finale involves rebelling against and killing God and then two teens having sex in a certain place so that the universe can go on without God. I threw them away. It is the first series I have done that with in over 20 years. Usually I can find something redeemable in a series. Not this one. I have to laugh as two of the angels are made out to be homosexuals. They start off about what appears to be a wholesome good vs. evil fight. Then both sides gang up on God in the end. God is killed by a stiff breeze when the glass case protecting him is broken.
