Trouble is, by end-November a lot of Canada is already buried under snow or very cold, making get-togethers difficult. I actually like early October, it’s closer to the real harvest season.

Depends on where you are. In some areas (i.e. much of the populated areas of British Columbia, southern Ontario and parts of Atlantic Canada), the harvest has just begun (or in some years hasn’t even started) in the second week of October.
