Mitt Romney called attempts to undermine him by questioning his Mormon faith "un-American" as he spoke to reporters in Nevada yesterday. Romney was specifically responding to reported "push-poll" phone calls being made in Iowa and New Hampshire, in which the calls reportedly begin as opinion polls but turn into statements and questions designed to highlight and cast doubt on Romney's Mormon faith. Here is what Romney had to say.....(Video)

If Romney’s camp is behind this, you can bet he has a way to give him ‘plausible’ deniability. But he is sleazy and I am more inclined to believe it is a work of his campaign than a McCain or Ron Paul, etc. polling game. The characterization may be off in the media, and it is not push polling so much as polling for data to arrange the next approach to squelching discussion of his Momronism. Mitt Romney has a lust to be the most powerful man in America and therefore in the world. I do not want a man like that as presidnet again ... the sinkEmperor and his shrewish Rodham-rodent hildebeast are enough of that lust for power!

The reason I can make this promise is because I know Mormons, and I know how we think.

Either the server was crashed, OR the whole thing was a set-up from the start ... I suspect strongly the latter, and from the Romney camp at that!

There were no lies presented as fact, except in the Bible inferiority one and that is debatable....

OH; by Whom??

Concerning this record the Prophet Joseph Smith said: "I told the brethern that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book."

I was addressing your blanket assertion that no Mormon would be devious enough to plant a push poll. Whether this current poll was a plant is hard to discern, there are indicators both ways and Western Wats is clamming up (which is suspicious, unless it’s not!).

But Romney is Rubbish for other reasons, Romneycare is a disaster. His immigration stance was a last minute conversion in 2006.

~”What do you consider “attacks” in the polling questions, tant?”~

There are several overt and specific attacks, such as the “cult” claim, the “BoM superior to the Bible” claim, etc. I don’t have the list of questions in front of me, and don’t feel like finding them. I would in this context, though, classify the entire line of questioning as an attack.

~”Are you joining the posters who claim that any question about the religion is an “attack”?”~

No. But the attempt to use religious creed against a political candidate, thereby necessitating the presentation of said creed in a negative light, is an attack on that creed.

Imagine: “George Bush believe in water mysteriously turning into wine. His faith says that only the people who accept Jesus are loved by his God enough to be saved in his heaven. George Bush’s faith teaches that people have inexplicably risen from the dead. What he calls holy scripture actually contains passages that instruct that gays should be murdered along with women who cheat on their husbands. Would you vote for a candidate with these beliefs?”

What in the above statement is false, or at least is not based on some degree of truth? Such a political ad would certainly be an attack on Bush’s faith, would it not? And what place has it in American political discourse?

The question, “How might your spiritual beliefs inform your policy decisions” is a valid question in the political arena. Sadly, by and large, that is not the kind of question being asked in Romney’s case.

A faithful Mormon, such as myself, and by all accounts Romney, derives his entire spiritual identity from the precepts taught by the LDS Church. That results in joy, comfort, and certainty that is priceless. Said person would not think of using these things as tools in a political campaign - to do so would be to take lightly the sacred things of God. An unscrupulous Mormon may, but I have seen no evidence that Romney is unscrupulous. If he is shown to be, I will oppose him as I would oppose any candidate shown to be corrupt.

~”If you all think this is “Un-American”, you are NOT prepared for the Clintons.”~

I do think it is un-American, and the vast majority of Americans agree with me. I maintain my stance that if Clinton tries these tactics, it will backfire badly.

This situation does provide a little laboratory to test that theory, so I’m watching it with much interest.

It’s been some time. Good to speak with you again.

Nope, just an expert on the subject. I’ve been wrong before in matters relating to Mormonism, but not often.

The vast majority of Americans agree with me in stating that the LDS organization is a cult.

There is no reason those questions should be off limits and a smart candidate will know how to answer them without spin. Now add to that lists questions about peep stones and becoming God and I think Bush would fair quite well overall.

I think all the candidates feet should be held to the fire on religious questions, not just Romney.

~”I was addressing your blanket assertion that no Mormon would be devious enough to plant a push poll.”~

That was not my assertion. You may want to go back and re-read. My point is that I know how faithful Mormons think, and Romney - as you and others have pointed out on many occasions - is by all accounts a faithful Mormon. Therefore, I can predict, beyond a reasonable doubt in my mind, that Romney did not authorize an attack on his own religion for political purposes.

Can I prove it? Well, I can’t prove a negative. Could it have come from a Romney operative without his knowledge? Possibly, though I highly doubt it. But if the move was directed by Romney, and it can be shown convincingly, then you have my promise as to my reaction.

In the meantime, what we are seeing here is an echo chamber where you are all convincing each other that Romney was behind this move - you are engaging in groupthink, without credible evidence to support your conclusions.

The end result, of course, will be a little bit of insanity on your part when Romney gains the nomination and moves on to occupy the White House - a scenario I currently see as probable. They might even officially classify the pathology as what we’ve come to know as “Romney Derangement Syndrome.” I am watching with great interest.

I’m encouraged to see that. Unfortunately, that is not what we’re seeing. The double standard is pervasive.

“An unscrupulous Mormon may, but I have seen no evidence that Romney is unscrupulous.” The way he ran for office in Massatwosh!ts was unscrupulous ... he turned into a liberal to get liberal votes, going against the fundamental beliefs of Mormonism regarding such things as the sanctity of the family and abortion on demand. Romney became whatever it took to get the votes so he could run the state. He is trying the same tactic with trying to become the candidate for the Republican party. THAT is sleaze. I don’t think he’s a genuine conservative, or even a genuine anything.

Interesting. So you think he’d be a better candidate if he were a better Mormon?

And I’ll go one step further ... I am convinced the Romney campaign is behind this polling, though they will create some means of plausible deniability for Mitt now that he has apparently exploited the polling effort.
