"Woman Shares Story Of Sneaking Across U.S., Mexico Border"
WKRN Nashville ^ | November 16, 2007 | Staff writer

Posted on 11/17/2007 12:51:44 AM PST by Tennessee Nana

The Tennessee Minutemen volunteer to patrol the border. Border Patrol agents are paid to do it.

Roger Maier is a border patrolman.

He said, “Anti-terror is the primary mission, but the inspection process does turn up violations, drugs, illegal immigration, fugitives.”

Customs agents enforce immigration law at the ports of entry.

Everyday about 100,000 people cross from Mexico to El Paso, Texas by car or foot.

Every week immigration officials catch about 100 people that try to deceive them and cross illegally.

To catch those people, officers use drug sniffing dogs.

...Border Patrol and Minutemen search vehicles.

Maier said, “We had an officer hear screaming in the area. Basically this woman was being roasted alive because she was so close to the engine compartment and was being burned while the car was moving.”

Why do illegal immigrants risk death to cross the border?

“Poor, I believe they are poor here. There’s a lot of poverty. There are no jobs.”

A woman named Maria crossed into the U.S. illegally. She spoke with News 2 and shared her side of the story.

She said, “We are illegals to them, that we’re coming intothis country illegally. We tried to pass through a canal. I don’t know where because I don’t know the area.”

Just across the border you can see the living conditions.

Studies show one of the biggest reasons for illegal immigration is money.

Maria, like so many others, risked her life and snuck into the United States with little more than hope.

She said, “We want to work, achieve goals, take our children out and help other people. I think we’re doing something right.”

The international border is located in the middle of the Rio Grande River.

Partsof the river are completely dried up. There are footprints in the sand where people cross from Mexico into the U.S.

Maria told News 2 how she came to the United States.

She said, “It was something so incredible. Because they told me there were cameras. I didn’t see it. I was just following. In that moment it was walk. We passed very quickly. I think it was a matter of 15 minutes, something short, but with adrenaline that they not see us. We arrived and we’re already on the other side.”

Maria lives in an unmarked and inconspicuous building.

It’sa shelter for migrants and refugees. Many hear about it through word of mouth, and they can get shelter and food.

They stay a few weeks before moving to other parts of the country.

Maria said, “We suffer so much, when we finally manage to get here, it was worth it.”

Shelter worker Simon Chandler said, “No human being is illegal. If someone comes to the door, is hungry and needs a place to stay, our first reaction is to take them in. Not to check papers, and that’s not our responsibility. That’s the responsibility of the border patrol.”

Maria fought to get into the U.S.in hopes of a brighter future for her family.

She said, “I think that if we truly want something, we have to fight for what we want and I want to get ahead.”

Bob Brown fights to keep people like her out of the U.S. in hopes of a brighter future for his.

He said, “It’s something I have to do for my family, grandchildren, and their children.”

Illegal immigration is a complex issue.

The Border Patrol, Minutemen, shelter, and customs agents said they’re doing the best they can with the resources they have.

Of course I wouldn't leave my kids. Where did you get that idea?

If you leave your door open and unattended, food on the table, allow people to sleep in the bed, then don't cry about it. That's exactly what our government is doing with the borders. We have a welfare state and open borders. It's insanity.

If I was in Mexico, I'd do the same as these people. Chances are you'll get away with it.

“don’t include me in that “we”...It’s the corrupt politicians! “

Who elected the politicians?...

Who has not spoken up about the illegal aliens until now?

Most of the American taxpayers have been silent on the subject...

Only a few have been speaking out for YEARS, but unheard...

This is not a new problem...but if we band together instead of quarrelling over nitpicky things, we could turn the tide...We have to, or go under...economically and as a nation...

Is deportation an option...of course, every time and anywhere an illegal alien is identified...

Should illegal aliens only be deported if they commit “further” crimes?...would a judge let you off the 1st time you robbed a bank? Broke into someone’s house?

Are the American taxpayers responsible to feed, clothe, support the 30,000,000 illegal aliens in our country? Why should we be? We dont give freebies to REAL immigrants...

Should we pay for medical care for the 30,000,000 illegal aliens in our country? Why should we? Again REAL immigrants have to pay for their own...and US veterans wait in line..

Other freebies? No...College? No....etc etc etc...

I want you deported and I'll fight for it.

And your little dog, too.

Maybe this deserves its own thread... Maybe there is even a FReeper who could take this case on. A healthy, decently educated (even just high school - but could be much, much more) adult wanting to emigrate to the United States of America, living somewhere FAR away (on the African continent would be good), a non-Muslim just for clarity's sake if possible, maybe even speaks some English (the illegals sure don't!). He/she has been trying to jump through all the hoops to get into the US. Legal and financial. For a few years.

The lawsuit would be for both entry into the states as well as funds received by the USA government by the average illegal: medical costs for the last 6 family illnesses, schooling for the last few years for the children, etc. The individual can say that he will use the monetary claim if won to pay his lawyer fees and maybe even the trip over.

I am no lawyer. But surely this is less frivolous of a case than half the stuff on the docks in our courts today. And what a point it proves. The government is going around its own laws to prefer lawbreakers. Hey hey hey.

When you put it that way, we have some agreement...but dont paint these illegal aliens as innocent people who just stumbled in here in the dark...

They deliberately came here...if my neighbor’s door was open, I would shut it for him...not go in and robbed him..

Many of them are just looking for a better life. So close the door. I don’t object. I’m against coming here illegally, but we are guilty of making it very easy, starting at the top.

You said you don’t blame the illegals, you would do the same thing.

The majority of them leave their families (children, etc) behind.

Of course you wouldn’t.

But that is where I got the idea.

I’m not crying about it, I’m doing something about it. And I do blame the illegals as well as the corrupt systems on both sides of the borders.

And now again you say again you would do the same thing. You would break the laws of a sovereign nation to do it? And be a criminal invader?

So if you were in Mexico, you would give up on your own country and go to another illegally and cause the honest working citizens to pay for your food, medical, etc out of their taxes?

Just asking

“schooling for the last few years for the children,”

Right now public schooling for illegal alien children is protected by a 1982 SCOTUS ruling...and without proof of ID, age etc..illegal aiens over the age of 18 go to school in order to apply for other freebies...

The rest of the items you listed are not...

I would like to see a SCOTUS case about this...

I would also like to see a SCOTUS case brought by one of the illegal aliens who are supposedly breaking their necks to serve in the US military....crickets LOL

If you want to ping an enemy of our laws to a thread (especially one that he is not even on), please don’t include me in your ping.

Thanks

Most people interested in this problem know who the enablers are.

Yes, to improve my family's life. If you want to give things away, don't complain when people take them. That's what we are doing. Our government leaves the door open, the light on, food in the fridge and clean sheets. Of course, people will take it.

“Many of them are just looking for a better life”

No they are not ...they are looking for suckers to support them....Their backyards are a 3rd world sesspool...

The Americans citizens’ “better life” erodes when they have to pay for the illegal aliens ...

Why dont you spare a thought for the real victims, the US taxpayers...

I see, you say their country is a backyard cesspool AND they're not seeking a better life. I think you need to rexamine your logic.

If you think I'm not sympathetic to paying taxes, you're not reading my posts.

Ditto! 100%! IMHO, he is the only one that will protect, preserve and respect the Constitution of the United States of America.

(You know. The country that used to be The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave - and that old (long forgotten) saying "Of the People, By the People and FOR the People".)

I don't know why you are jumping all over my case.

I did not elect the politicians. Oh OK I did vote for Bush.

You won't find me quarreling over nit-picky things.

So if you could please aim you ire at others I would appreciate it.

And BTW, I still love you.

“you say their country is a backyard cesspool”

No I never mentioned their country...I said their backyards...meaning here in the US...

For you I will write slower...

When they illegal aliens break into our country like thieves in the night...they make cesspools of the front and backyards, plus destroy the insides, of the AMERICAN properties they unlawfully live in...

That is not living a better life...that is living in someone else’s world and destroying that world through disrespect and lack of value...
