Giuliani Slipping (Gallup Poll: RG 28, FT 19, JM 13, MR 12, MH 10)
The National Review ^ | November 16, 2007 | Byron York

Posted on 11/16/2007 11:26:30 AM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

A new Gallup poll of the national Republican race shows Rudy Giuliani's support slipping to its lowest level since before he entered the race. The survey of self-identified Republicans and Republican leaners has Giuliani leading the GOP contest with 28 percent – down from 34 percent in the Gallup survey taken two weeks ago. Fred Thompson is second with 19 percent, John McCain is third with 13 percent, Mitt Romney is fourth with 12 percent, and Mike Huckabee is fifth with ten percent.

Giuliani's support reached its highest point in Gallup polls, 49 percent, in March. In the months since, it has moved around in the mid- to low-30s range. Of the other candidates, McCain is down a bit from recent Gallup polls, while Huckabee's ten percent is three points higher than it has ever been before. Finally, Ron Paul is at five percent, which matches his previous high point, reached last month.

You don’t know if your statement is true. You want it to be true, but that does not make it accurate.

I am convinced that Fred is our strongest and most honorable candidate.

He started off with the individual liberty/limited-government/trust-in-the-people philosophical umbrella that unites Republicans and broadens their appeal. Now he’s been filling it in with substantial, big-picture AND detailed policy positions. He comes across with a mix of coolness, gravitas and warmth that is just gold for a one-on-one national race, where television rules.

I hope that Romney’s clever purchase of early-primary positioning doesn’t pay off for him, because I don’t see him as having that appeal for the general election at all. On the other hand, Romney would be a fantastic #2 on Fred’s ticket, as he exudes a still-rising, COO-like management competence and experience to balance out Fred’s Chairman of the Board-like maturity. Also, his geographic balance (MA, UT & MI) is perfect for Fred.

NH voters really vote first for their special primary position and role, which means they don’t want to consider a politician who hasn’t put in the requisite months of retail politicking within their state. On the other hand, they love to be a kingmaker and be credited with giving their candidate a major boost. Further, McCain has a surprising legacy of support up there from previous campaigning.
That means with the right momentum and blitz Fred might still make a good showing there, but he’s also at real risk of coming in 4th.

I’ve no doubt Fred’s our man, the question is whether he can best Mitt and Rudy to get himself there.

"As it stands, I think Thompson has the potential to garner the most primary votes as a block with his southern strategy. When all is said and done, Rudy might actually come in third place in terms of primary states he wins."

Absolutely. The fact that the MSM has virtually ignored the GOP race (how 'bout that Kerik non-coverage!), and will continue to do so, allows Fred's advertising to work for him. Major, major plus.

"Wait, haven’t we seen articles in the last week saying... Senator Thompson is finished,"

In watching the local news coverage of Fred Thompson's rally in Pensacola yesterday, I found out that George Stepinlotsofit or whatever his name is, was there as well. (had I known he was there I would have found him just to smirk at him!) He told the local news, in an amazed tone, that Fred isn't out of this race! ya think?

Film does not do justice to FDT. He looked healthy and vibrant. His points were clear and consise. No notes, ah's, uh's or head bobs in a speech that didn't sound rehearsed. If you get a chance to hear his speak, do it. He is far from out of this race and needs to be our next CIC, IMHO.

All Fred needs to do is keep talking to the people.

Do you think that Fred is the Republicans best candidate to beat Hillary? She scares me to death and while her team of henchmen are putting out nothing but “she’s going to be our next President”, I didn’t think that the people of NY would elect her to the Senate! Then you hear the ones calling in to Hannity and Rush singing her praises...
What would be the Republican dream ticket? In your all’s opinion.

Rudy = I am a flaming Lib, but I’m a law and order lib. Sure I’ll take your guns away, but you won’t need them.

Mitt = I said I was a falming Lib when I was running against Teddy, now I saw I’m a staunch conservative. Was I lying then or am I lying now?

McLame = 1St Amendment, never heard of it. Teddy and the rest of the Gang of 14 loved my Amnesty Bill, you bunch of Rednecks. !@#$% Limbaugh

Huckabee - Amnesty is God’s way of giving us white folks a second chance. Now excuse me while I raise taxes.

Paul - “Hey Dennis, did they use the anal probe on you too.”

Exactly.

.....and the only ones that care about these national polls of “Republicans and Republican-leaning independents” are those that support candidates that aren’t exactly doing well in state to state polls of well-vetted likely primary voters.

All national polls are now completely worthless because they do not take into account the certain alignment of the American polity that will occur amid all the early primary voting in January. Iowa, Wyoming, Michigan, Nevada, South Carolina, Michigan, New Hampshire, Florida, and Maine all select delegates during January. Because the remaining states often follow a “herd mentality,” voting for the leaders in the leading states, insightful polling should focus on those early states.
