Teacher charged with sex offences against student

Mississauga high school teacher has been charged with sexually assaulting one of her students.

Peel Regional Police wouldn't reveal what school the woman works at. However, well-placed sources say she teaches special education at Notre Dame Secondary School in Brampton.

The charges relate to a 16-year-old male student at the school. Police allege the victim and teacher engaged in sexually "explicit" conversations over the internet over the past few months, which led to a face-to-face meeting where the boy was sexually assaulted.

Det. Sgt. Greg Knapton, officer-in-charge of the force's Special Victims Unit, said the internet communication allegedly occurred between the boy's home and the woman's home.

Police have seized the teacher's computer for further investigating, Knapton said.

Dina Calautti, 35, of Mississauga, has been charged with two counts of sexual exploitation and one count each of sexual assault and internet luring of a child. She will be appearing before a Brampton court on Dec 17.

Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board spokesperson Bruce Campbell said she has been suspended with pay, as per Board policy. She has been with the Board for 10 years and at Notre Dame since 2000, Campbell added.

"Obviously we are disturbed by the allegations but we are cooperating fully with the police investigation," he said.

A letter will be going home today with Notre Dame students.

Several students speak highly of Calautti on www.ratemyteachers.ca, a website where students can rate and comment about their teachers and schools. Many students refer to Calautti as "the best teacher at Notre Dame."

"Awesome english teacher," one student said. "She is so smart, nice and kind. She makes everything interesting to learn about."

Anyone with further information is asked to contact 905-453-2121 ext. 3460 or Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS/8477.

From the article I linked to: It is not known who filed the complaint against her.

My guess would be a jealous friend of the boy.

Does anyone else notice that for the most part, the media is silent on the sexual abuse of children by public school teachers?

The public schools are their churches, and the teachers are, for the most part, infallible.

Gentlemen of the jury, have you reached a verdict?

Not sure yet, but this could end up in a hung jury.

Probably because most of these cases don't involve "children" at all. In our media-saturated culture, boys are more sexually knowledgeable at 14 than their grandfathers were at 21, and they are willing participants in nearly every one of these stories.

Do you really think that boys growing up in an agrarian society 100 years ago knew less about animal husbandry than do the boys of today?

I don't know why this seems to be happening more (boys with female teachers). Or, maybe we are just hearing about it more.

Let's rephrase that.

Today, boys are more sexually knowledgeable about human females at 14 than their grandfathers were at 21.

Again, I must disagree. Most children grew up in homes that were probably one or two rooms 100 years ago. It wasn't like mom and dad were sneaking off into the barn, you know.

By the way, this pic

will be quite the turn on for a guy I know from Wisconsin.

"Good night, John Boy."

"Good night, Mary Ellen."

Det. Sgt. Greg Knapton of Peel's Special Victims Unit said Calautti was charged because of her position of authority over a student. He described the sexual assault as being "minor" in that it involved an allegation of leg touching.

"There is no suggestion any sexual intercourse took place. The other offences involve conversations between them in their residences.

"These are offences because she is in a position of authority and he can't consent because he's not 18."
