Study: Black pessimism worst since 1980s

Blacks increasingly less certain about racial progress in America

WASHINGTON - Growing numbers of blacks say they’re worse off than five years ago and don’t expect their lives to improve, a study released Tuesday shows. Black pessimism about racial progress in America, according to the study, is the worst it’s been in more than two decades.

The survey by the Pew Research Center, a Washington-based research organization, paints a mixed picture of race relations following Hurricane Katrina and the Jena Six case, in which six black teens were charged with beating a white student at a high school in the town of Jena, La.

It found that just one in five blacks, or 20 percent, said things were better off for blacks compared with five years ago; that is the smallest percentage since 1983, when 20 percent also made that claim. In-between, the percentage of blacks who said things had gotten better had grown, only to drop back to 20 percent.

Another 29 percent of blacks said things had gotten worse as opposed to staying the same, the largest number since 32 percent made that claim in 1990.

In addition, fewer than half of all blacks, or 44 percent, said they expected their prospects to brighten in the future. That’s down from 57 percent in 1986, during the height of the Reagan administration when the Justice Department actively sought to curtail affirmative action in favor of race-neutral policies.

Whites see black gains

Whites have a different view about black progress, according to the survey. Whites were nearly twice as likely as blacks to see black gains in the past five years. A majority of whites polled, or 56 percent, also said they believed prospects for blacks would improve in the future.

“Most African Americans believe the government response to problems is one of benign neglect rather than forceful action.”

Yes RR, it is indeed a doozy. The recent African American response to problems is a travesty. They failed as leaders and as citizens in New Orleans during Katrina.

They should be worried, the demorats have found a larger minority, Illegals, to vote for them. However, the truth is that a lot of good black families are doing really well. My neighbors for instance.

Why wouldn’t Blacks be pessimistic: their “leaders”,the Democrats and the MSM are wedded to a narrative of Black oppression and despair. Meanwhile, Black Africans fall all over themselves to come here for the boundless opportunities the country offers. How sad.

Broker, you may think it is a dead issue, but believe me it is not. The resentment of most Blacks against Whites is very much alive today. Some call it racism.

I am hoping we can start addressing it as resentment, because there are sound, spiritual solutions to ending resentment.

70% of births are to unwed mothers.

They have good reason to be discouraged and depressed.

I think its higher than 70 percent. Some southern states have municipalities exceeding 90 percent!

I guess this means that the RATS will get 98% of the black vote next year versus the usual 96%.

The AP must have done an “objective” poll of its mail room boys (all black) who the AP has not promoted nor given a pay raise to in 13 years.

I am a black man who regularly engages in discourse with people in my community as to why the DemocRAT Party is the worst political, social, cultural and historical disaster EVER to befall the black community ouside slavery itself.

Keep fighting the good fight! I truly believe the Republican Party's conservative positions on social and moral issues (such as pro-life and marriage) will eventually attract more and more votes from black Americans.

Five trillion dollars of reparations in the last forty years and they still can't get their sh*t together, even though the black middle and upper class has quadrupled. I think they better start listening to Bill Cosby and company now. The old victim game has about run its course..

"It is ludicrous to say that racism is holding anyone back. Not today, in 2007."

Jesse Jackson would probably say that racism prevented the Jena 6 from actually beating the white kid to death.

"The staggering level of political cognitive dissonance amongst my people is frightning."

I couldn't believe some caller on Medved today complained that since there are no black congresspeople it "proved" that republicans are racist. Medved pointed out that the GOP nominated black candidates in PA and MD. Black voters voted for white liberals over black republicans. The true racists have always been the democrats.

I often feel like asking myself - what is the point of articles like this - are they meant to "inform" or is there a broader agenda?

Can we say white pessimism worst since the 1980's or would that be considered to be incitement or maybe even racist?

When asked about Bill Clinton being described as the “first black president” Louis Farakhan responded the even though Clinton did little for blacks they sympathized with him because he was a lowlife:

FARRAKHAN: . . .Although black people looked at Bill Clinton as a black president, he did less for black people than other presidents. We lost the safety net under his administration, for welfare mothers. We lost a lot. But his charisma, no one can take that away from Mr. Clinton. His ability to use language in many ways has attracted the hearts of black people. And the more the establishment beat up on him with his inappropriate behavior, the more black people understood his weakness, and forgave him, and came around him.

Ohio nominated a black Republican too, but he lost just like the other two.
