A couple have told how they paid a £750 ransom to a gang for the return of their beloved pet lurcher.

The dog, named Buddy, was snatched by four men as David Cornock collected his morning newspaper. advertisement

After almost two months, he had given up all hope of getting it back. But Mr Cornock and his wife Mareth received a £750 ransom demand.

After a clandestine meeting in a dark layby, they were reunited with their pet dog.

Police criticised the couple for giving in to the ransom demand, saying it made their work "difficult". But Mrs Cornock, 63, a retired hairdresser, said that she and her 66-year-old husband did not hesitate for a moment when the gang contacted them.

They bargained the ransom down from £900. Mrs Cornock said: "It was a dark and rainy night and we met him by a roundabout. I was frightened. But Buddy recognised me straight away. I just burst into tears of relief. We had to be brave but we knew this was the only way to get him back."

The couple bought Buddy, an 18-month-old grey and white lurcher, as a two-month-old puppy for £150.

It was snatched by a gang of four men from outside the Co-op store in Saltford, north Somerset, on Sept 25.

Mr Cornock, a retired businessman, said: "Someone came running in and said, 'They're stealing your dog'. Two men had grabbed Buddy and bundled him into a silver hatchback car with two other men inside.

"I ran outside but they had already gone. It all happened in seconds."

The Cornocks contacted the police but said that officers were "very slow" to release CCTV images of the suspects.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary urged victims to contact the police rather than give in to blackmailers -

Would you pay to get your doggie back? Your cat? Your parakeet or lizard?

At least the Dognapper was smart enough not to ask that the ransom be paid in U.S. Dollars.

If you have an animal you love; and CAN pay. ..you will. What is sad though; is that they paid. . .without benefit of police protection.

Next time; these people may not be so considerate. They may be in a hurry. ..or simply greedy without any idea honoring the 'deal'.

This couple could have just as easily been killed. . .and their dog as well; with perps escaping witih money. Next 'dognapping'; that could well be the case.

Yup. I’m afraid I agree with you. I mean, if they wanted to pay the money, fine ... but let the PD do their job and see if you can catch the skanky bastids in the act ... if I had the means, I certainly would NOT like the thought of what they’d do to Foo Foo if I refused.

Seriously. Dogs are very useful animals out here on the farm. Cats are too...as far as mousing goes. And that’s about it. A rabbit my dog catches, or a duck or a goose or a pheasant that s/he retrieves is MUCH more useful to my family as food than is a half eaten mouse left at the doorstep.

And yet, how those cats do worship and revere me! I am “Mommy, Giver of All Foodstuffs.”

I have both, but I’m just more of a practical, non-anthropomorphic Dog Person.

Now, don’t be hatin’, you Cat Supremacist, LOL!

No. I love animals and I love my dogs but if they should become a serious drain on my finances or future security or lifestyle I would look for them a good home or have them put down. I have seen too many people who can't move on to a more secure situation because they have a pet. For example a lady whose house was falling down around her but would not go ahead and move in with her kids (which they really wanted her to do but without her 3 dogs) because she could not take her dogs. I know of another woman who spends a fortune on vet bills for four dogs. She simply cannot afford the bills and has too many other responsibilities to be worrying about pets. I will go the extra mile for a pet but not to the extent that it becomes a serious mental, physical or financial burden.

I would pay for my dog or cat. They can have the < censored> bird with my blessing.

And then I would either go hunting or hire someone to go hunting for me. I am sure puppy or kitty would be quite hungry after the ordeal and something nice and tender and freshly carved from the kidnappers body would be just the ticket.

Messing with what is mine is not a good idea.
