VANITY - MP3 Players?
11/13/07 | bear_slayer

Posted on 11/13/2007 6:35:16 PM PST by Bear_Slayer

I'm thinking about getting an MP3 player.

I know IPOD is the standard, but what other options exist? Which should I avoid?

What features should I look for, total storage size, &etc?

I have an MP3 player. It’s all about protocols and file types.

This depends on what you want to use it for. Some common features include an FM tuner, video and photo playback, and voice recording. Look for a player that can play, at a minimum, mp3, wav, apple lossless (ALAC) or Ogg Vorbis. Make sure that the player supports mp3 up to 320 kbps for maximum sound quality. My personal recommendation would be the Creative Zen Vision:M. It’s a good alternative to the Ipod, doesn’t require Itunes, and has plenty of available accessories. 30 GB is plenty of size for most people - only the most hardcore should have a music collection bigger than that. Another good value is actually the Microsoft Zune, which is on sale at Buy.com for only $99. I personally own the Toshiba Gigabeat S, which I like very much, but I have sent it back for repair three times so I am hesitant to recommend it.

If you want cheap and good (not necessarily great) without spending a lot of money, there are options: I got an MP3 player for about 25 bucks a couple of years ago that had no memory, but had a slot for an SD card. Okay, SD cards cost extra, except that I had a spare card from my camera.

So if you have a decent size SD card that you aren't using, you can get it cheap.

I enjoyed mine right up until last Christmas when I was given a shuffle, which is good, though it can be a little irritating (and a little bit nice, too). I still use the old thing every now and then. If you're interested, I'll dig it out and get the details about it.

I bought my wife a 30 gig Ipod video 2 years ago.

She loves it.

No problems with it, it does what it is supposed to do.

Obviously the more options the steeper the price. How good is the FM tuner? Is it worth having?

I can't stand radio anymore so I can't see the value.

I have a Zen vision M and it works beautifully, although I almost smashed it until I got used to the touch pad. The battery life on it is a bit beyond IPOD, that was my sole reason that lead me to buy it.

The FM Tuner on the Zen Vision M is top notch. IF you hate radio however, it is of little value, haven’t yet tried the voice recorder.

Because of the rapidly changing technology and dropping prices, I didn't want to sink a lot of money into mine so I just got a minimal one, but with a microSD slot in it so that I essentially have a hard drive of unlimited size and can make up custom "album cards" that are kept in a card wallet. Since I only wanted it for audio, even my under- $80. cheapo player has more features than what I need such as a photo viewer.

I've had it for several months and it's been working fine so far.

Try to determine how many different songs you would actually want to listen to/have access to at any given time. That will help determine the size you need. Also, if you plan to store video on it, you'll need plenty of size. If you just want a basic mp3 player.

The 8 GB Sansa is nice. So are the Zen Vision products.

I'm happy with this one, but bmwcyle has the right idea. I've never had a problem with DRM with my player and it shows up as just another folder. Drag and drop is all it takes to load it.

The battery weighs more than the player does.

My goal is to determine what options are available and what I actually want. I definitely don't want radio. Satellite radio if such is possible.

I see people with them at the gym and I can't think of anywhere else I would use one. So I think the only option I want is MP3 player.

Do MP3 songs average a certain size?

If you use the radio a lot, you could just buy a radio. I recommend an FM tuner because a lot of people use their mp3 in the health club, and they often have different content broadcast over FM including the television audio feeds. It’s totally optional though. I also have never ever used the voice record feature, so I wouldn’t bother with that either. If you’re looking for old reliable, www.geeks.com has a 40gb Ipod with a bluetooth receiver for 149.95. I considered getting it if only to have access to all those accessories.

This depends on what you want to use it for.

I want one that allows me to administer a harmless but extremely painful electric shock to “artists” who annoy me.

I also want a television remote that does the same thing.

Yo Katie, I got your “top story” right here!

This is my second creative product. My daughter has the Zen Jukebox, and I got her the Zen M for Christmas.
