It’s gotten so that every nickel, dime and half-assed LEO outfit has a detachment of Nomex-clad, body-armored strumtruppen that are just dying to play with their G-5s, flash-bangs and other gee-whiz goodies.
Most, but not all of the blame goes to the War on Drugs and its consequent shredding of civil liberties, property rights and basic human dignity.
No knock warrants? Smash and enter? Blow away the wrong person? Wrong door? Opps sorry folks! Better put some ice on that.
Asset forfeiture has made it indescribably worse! If you are a greedy LEO planner and see a piece of property or hardware you covet, hey! Cook up an excuse, call in a raid, and shazzam! It’s yours!
Even if the owners are as pure as the driven snow, it’s going to cost them an arm and a leg to get it back, not to mention take a heck of a long time. In the meantime, it’s yours.
How in the world did we allow America to get to this condition?

COPS have become just another bunch of unionized thugs - unionized thugs with badges, guns, and perks that would make the average teamster’s head spin.
There needs to be a continual accounting for incidents like these and they shouldn’t be to another COP, i.e a police chief or police supervisor - they should be accountable to a civilian review board with no police connections.

You're right. It is a brave new world, one in which dogs are more often recognized and valued as members of the family. One reason for the 2nd Amendment is to help the government storm troopers remember that We, the People, have rights that are not to be trampled upon. My gut reaction would be the same: defend my family and property and shoot back.
Depends on your definition of 'rarely'. Sheriff's deputies have shot and killed 2 dogs this year in the county where I live. Neither dog belonged to or lived where the suspect did. Almost the same scenario as this one in both cases - serving a warrant and trespassing. Bad enough if the cops apologize.
Unless management steps in with some honesty and integrity the badge is going to be a target, and not in the distant future. The Sheriff's spokesman in my county said it was a shame but that LEO's lives were more important. He said the same thing when an entire family was held at gunpoint on the ground for 4 hours because the son had the same name as a suspect in a robbery. Although law enforcement discovered within an hour that they had the wrong family, they continued to terrorize and verbally abuse this family for another 3 hours. Unfortunately this is not as rare as you would like to believe.
Those of you in law enforcement know what I am talking about...clean your house before you lose the trust of the majority.

Well that's a stupid statement. Problems like this grow into bigger problems if not checked.
Trigger happy cops, trespassing on private property without a warrant, shooting anything that moves IS a big problem anyway.
If this story was about a homeowner killing "oh lets say" three officers
for killing a dog, would you support the end result of the story?
There are stupid people in every profession. Including dog catchers.
Shame on anyone trying to justify any death of an Officer of the law over a Dog.
And yes, I hold an extremly high respect for the lives of Law enforcement!

Police officers know there are no real consequences for shooting dogs (only cause of action is for property damage, a couple of hundred dollars at most), so they will often do so without second thought.
"They?" Oh, I'm not so sure "they" call her 'brilliant" I am pretty sure that's just how she feels about herself, hence the self given moniker. Reminds me a little of Narcissus.
Any reason they shouldn't be prosecuted? If you or I cut through someone's yard and kill someone's dog, we would be. If a police officer has no legitimate reason for entering a person's yard, why should he be treated any differently?
