It’s gotten so that every nickel, dime and half-assed LEO outfit has a detachment of Nomex-clad, body-armored strumtruppen that are just dying to play with their G-5s, flash-bangs and other gee-whiz goodies.
Most, but not all of the blame goes to the War on Drugs and its consequent shredding of civil liberties, property rights and basic human dignity.
No knock warrants? Smash and enter? Blow away the wrong person? Wrong door? Opps sorry folks! Better put some ice on that.
Asset forfeiture has made it indescribably worse! If you are a greedy LEO planner and see a piece of property or hardware you covet, hey! Cook up an excuse, call in a raid, and shazzam! It’s yours!
Even if the owners are as pure as the driven snow, it’s going to cost them an arm and a leg to get it back, not to mention take a heck of a long time. In the meantime, it’s yours.
