Prayer distracts us from finding real world solutions (That's the point, you idiot)

In the darkest hour of despair, when all hope seemed lost, the communal leader called together his counsel of the faithful and uttered ritual sayings. Sounds like something out of the eighth century, doesn't it? Just this past week, however, Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue, facing a massive and seemingly unrelenting drought, declared that "The only solution is rain, and the only place we get that from is from a higher power." He then sent out responses to leaders of several faiths to take part in a prayer service.

The potential establishment clause violations inherent in state sponsored prayer are disturbing. Whenever Government appears to endorse religion over nonreligion, we should be weary However, what is even more disturbing is the high level of fatalism and determinism involved in the very act of submission to a higher power.

The All Mighty Govmint is the solution to all mans problems. < /s >

One would certainly think so looking at the American government today. A mighty sad state of affairs. What we need is far less government and way more God in our lives.

This would be an excellent start in that direction.

if an atheist get elected we always get atheism rammed down our throats in the form of the “establishment clause”.

“congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion OR OR OR OR OR OR the free exercise thereof.”

it doesn’t say that a governor of a state cannot freely exercise his religion. if he’s praying in his office and asks for help in praying he’s not demanding it, nor is he mandating a day of prayer. he is engaging in free exercise of religion just as an atheist governor worships himself in his pretense of intellectual superiority and demands that those around him abandon their religious beliefs through his denigration and belittlement and allegation that the “establishment clause” is being violated when there is no “establishment clause” in the constitution.

(ask an atheist if he holds karl marx and the “scientific method” in high esteem; the answer, invariably, is yes.)

Wow, I had no idea Christianity taught people to judge their fellow man in this way. What happened to "Judge not, lest ye be judged yourself"? I'd love to hear you cite an example of an atheist elected official anywhere in the US who has demanded that people abandon their religion. I for one, as an atheist, would fully oppose any official trying to pull that crap.

Apparently invariably doesn't mean what you think it means. I think the world would be much better if Karl Marx had never written that crap he wrote.

Prayer distracts us from finding real world solutions

Odd. Prayer has often resulted in practical solutions to my problems.

The practical solutions are often so "outside of the box" that I am pretty sure I would not have thought of them on my own.

No, it was the overwhelming sense of self satisfaction and holier-than-thou attitude. Not all Christians have that, but almost everyone I've met who does is a Christian. Thankfully, the vast majority of Christians I've met are nothing like that. They actually listen to the teachings of the Bible. You however...

I also noticed that you failed to cite even one atheist elected official anywhere in the US who has demanded that people abandon their religion. Perhaps you know that your comments were just pure hatred towards those Jesus told you to love. Truth hurts, doesn't it?

correction; it should have read, “is it your brilliance?”

Christians are not the one whom they worship. they are human, as i am, with the ability to be fed to the brim with people hiding behind everything they can find as they become more and more obnoxious in their self-aggrandizing stance as the most brilliant of beings. you consider anyone of faith to be weak and without merit and devoid of worth; especially Christians. you have no tolerance for them and couch your dislike in condescending tolerance. if atheists had the chance, they would turn churches into warehouses.

“you still have to cite one atheist elected official.”

the truth still hurts.

When did I say or imply that? I think true Christians are great people. Your constant judging of other people and bearing false witness against them makes you far from acting as a true Christian.

Your deep-seated hatred towards atheists must be rooted in something. Is there a quote in the Bible that you base this on?

you sound like a psychiatrist speaking to a patient. your hate for christians and “their bible” drips with condescension. you presume much from your perch up in the atheist stratosphere of superiority. it’s amazing that you all don’t have perpetual nosebleeds. maybe, someday, you atheists will let the world exist in peace without your constant search for cosmic justice and insidious christian conspiracies.

“I’m already “weary” of this piece just after reading the excerpt. Clearly the guy doesn’t have an editor. But why should government endorse “nonreligion” over religion? Isn’t that also a “violation” of the establishment clause?”

Well said.

I am wary of the implication that atheism should be endorsed over religion.

I would note that, following the prayers for rain by the Governor and others, that there was indeed rain a couple of days ago, although perhaps not enough to end the drout.

I understand atheists’ non-belief. I don’t share it, but I can understand that mindset. I tolerate, but disagree with, them. What I don’t see is similar tolerance on the part of many atheists who post here and elsewhere. This country is composed of a majority, a vast majority I would say, of Christians and other believers, and they are free to believe and exercise that belief freely. I never understand objections by atheists.

when all else fails, denigrate, demean, impugn, destroy. you’ll never accept another point of view without judging it. (straight from the atheist cookbook of intolerance and venom.) see you in the public square, very soon, as you figuratively knock down christmas trees.)
