Dan Rather marks 1st anniversary with HDNet
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BY RICHARD HUFF DAILY NEWS TV EDITOR Tuesday, November 13th 2007, 4:00 AM
Print Email Suggest a Story Dan Rather was in Cuba Monday, hoping for a gift from above in the form of an interview with Fidel Castro.
He'd been told it wasn't going to happen, but he's not giving up.
"I have no expectations," said Rather. "Do I have hope? I always have hope. You drive to the heart of the story and give yourself your best chance."
It's been that way for the past year, since news legend and former CBS anchor Rather joined Mark Cuban's HDNet.
Rather and his HDNet team have traveled the globe to produce a weekly one-hour newsmagazine, "Dan Rather Reports," which airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. Tuesday night's show, marking his anniversary, has Rather 450 miles north of the Arctic Circle looking at the Northwest Passage and the impact of global warming.
In the past year, they've reported on Afghanistan, troubles with Boeing's big airliners and problems with electronic voting machines.
"It's been amazing," Rather said yesterday. "We were a start-up in the best and worst sense of the phrase. What we have built is a truly extraordinary team of people."
Going in, Rather said there were plenty of friends, and enemies, who said he'd never be able to pull off the weekly magazine concept. Rather proudly noted he and his crew were working on their 51st hour of programming.
"I've never been prouder of a stretch of work I've done," he said.
"Mark Cuban has been sensationally good to me," he said. "He's been better than his word, better than his contract. He told me I'd have complete and absolutely creative control. And he's done that."
It hasn't been an easy stretch. Rather just turned 76, and the schedule he's keeping is better-suited for a guy half his age.
"I've never been afraid of work," Rather said, stopping to get through a Cuban checkpoint. "I pride myself on my work ethic. This has stretched me further, faster and harder than anything I can remember in my career."
Rather calls the schedule "hellacious."
"I've learned to make it work," Rather said. "I've learned to do more than I thought I could ever do. My goal for the next year is to do more, better."
He'll work on that while watching his controversial lawsuit against CBS make its way through the legal system. Rather maintains CBS breached his contract and was pressured by the Bush administration to discredit a report about the President's military record.
CBS officials have said Rather's suit is "without merit."
The suit hasn't stopped Rather. He'll be in Cuba for a couple of days working on pieces about the country today - and see what it might be like without Castro down the road.
The pieces will get on HDNet in a few weeks, Rather said, unless Castro speaks.
"The weather is wonderful," Rather said. "I haven't had a chance to throw in a fishing line yet, but I might."
I posted this under news/current events but we really need a media section under the topic choices.
Let me know when it’s the 1st anniversary of his pushing up daiseys so I know where to pee that day. I’ll be sure to drink lots of water and beer.
If he licks a little further, the reporter will taste Mark Cubans head!
Well I am glad to been notified about this. Otherwise Dan Rather could have fallen off the earth and been just as visible as in this stealth job.
“In 1953, he received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Sam Houston State University “
At that time it was Sam Houston State Teachers College. LOL
Rather being on HDNet makes me actually glad that it will be removed from my basic HD package in about a month. No, I will not pay extra for it.
I wonder if they've had their 51st viewer yet.
LOL!
another reason not to be a liberal journalist.......never and I mean NEVER finding out what butt tastes like...............................EEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWW
“I wonder if they’ve had their 51st viewer yet.”
The only way Rather has viewers is if someone punches in the wrong channel on the remote.
BOR tells his audience what an Anti-American gem Cuban is also. Big Left and Little Leftie. Ha ha.
Sure his degree wasn’t Bachelor of Ultra Liberal Liars at Sam Houston Institute of Technology?
I have used the last part before but I love your part put before it.
Thanks.
Got to have a new Tee shirt made up:
Bachelor degree of
Ultra
Liberal
Liars from
Sam
Houston
Institute of
Technology.
I used to watch BOR(e) all the time after 9/11 - I liked what he did about exposing the Hollywierd hypocrits who told us all to donate money and then walked away without checking to see that the 9/11 (especially police and fire) families got the donations. But now? Never watch him, and especially after what he said about Freep.
When thinking of Dan rather the follow key words come to mind:
Washed up, irrelevant, sour grapes, angry, mental disease, liberal media bias, don’t know when to retire and go away.
In the past year, they’ve reported on Afghanistan, troubles with Boeing’s big airliners and problems with electronic voting machines.
An opportunity to slam the military and big business plus feed the voting conspiracy cooks. In other words typical Dan Rather.
“It’s been amazing,” Rather said yesterday. “We were a start-up in the best and worst sense of the phrase. What we have built is a truly extraordinary team of people.”
Wonder if Mary Mapes is on the payroll too.
