NATIONAL RIGHT TO LIFE SHAKES UP RACE FOR REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION:
Nations largest pro-life group endorses Fred Thompson WASHINGTON Marking the first major endorsement by a national grassroots organization in the Republican presidential contest, National Right to Life, the nations largest pro-life organization representing pro-lifers in fifty state affiliates and more than 3,000 local chapters, today announced its endorsement of former Senator Fred Thompson for President of the United States.
As the first major grassroots organization to enter the Republican presidential race, National Right to Life is proud to endorse Fred Thompson, stated Wanda Franz, Ph.D., president of National Right to Life. Our endorsement is a testament to Senator Thompsons long-standing pro-life record, his commitment to unborn children, and our belief in his ability to win.
In making its endorsement, National Right to Life considered the position of candidates on the life issues, their records on the life issues and their ability to win.
Fred Thompson has had a strong, consistent pro-life record throughout his political career. Thompson opposes abortion and believes the 1973 abortion on demand Supreme Court decision was wrongly decided and must be reversed. During his eight years in the United States Senate, he always opposed using tax dollars to promote or pay for abortion and supported the many pro-life measures such as parental notice and consent.
Thompson has also stated his opposition to the kind of stem cell research that requires killing human embryos, while supporting the kind of stem cell research that harms no one and is the only kind producing cures.
Since announcing his candidacy in September, Fred Thompson has run second only to pro-abortion candidate Rudy Giuliani for the Republican nomination in the overwhelming majority of national polls. As pro-lifers throughout the nation begin to unite behind his candidacy, he will be well positioned to win the nomination and the presidency.
Unlike endorsements by single individuals, this endorsement was made by representatives of statewide pro-life organizations across America which themselves are comprised of local community chapters and grassroots activists, said Dr. Franz.
The National Right to Life Committee is the nations largest pro-life group with affiliates in all 50 states and over 3,000 local chapters nationwide. National Right to Life works through legislation and education to protect those threatened by abortion, infanticide, euthanasia and assisted suicide.
Bad strategy for their issue.
How much did Romney pay you to come here and post on his behalf?
Congratulations for packing so many tired, cliched talking points into such a tiny post. That’s some tight coding!
“Many people think”
Pffft.
They bassed their decsisison of the facts, not money or fame....
Nice call...
Sure, we believe you. Really.
Okay, I misread your statement. I withdraw mine. I disagree with you strongly, but at least Huck is pro-life.
Hmmm... Didn’t I read someplace how FRed’s principled, Federalist stand WRT Roe v. Wade was a fatal blunder?
Sadly no.
this is the beginiing of the turn around...
there will be others...
“This is the second most important issue to me, only illegal immigration outweighs it. And Fred is on the correct side of both issues.”
My feelings exactly! GO FRED!
I agree with you. They were impatient and it’s going to cost them, at minimum, the Life Amendment in the GOP platform. High price for a distant hope.
Trust me when I tell you that Rudy’s campaign has a strong grassroots campaign.
Nice try kid, now go tell your mother she’s calling you...
“Pat Robertson says Fred’s pro-life credentials aren’t pure enough”
But Rudy’s are??
I didn't know that pro-abortion, pro-gay, militant authoritarians had much of a "grassroots" to draw from. At least not in the GOP.
Encouraging, yes, but also should be a red flag to the conservative elite bought off by Romney. The grassroots seems relunctant to follow them on that endorsement.
I don't know if I would say they were bought off though (that maybe part of it and I think it is) I think they jumped too soon because of Rudy. I will give Mitt this, he looks a lot more pro life than Rudy. But these big guys can't about face, because they would loose face in doing so...
Maybe they can use this as an excuse to jump ship...
The NRTL chose the most viable pro-life conservative candidate running, who they felt best represented the pro-life movement in America today. Fred Thompson is that man.
Btw, the pro-life plank will remain in the GOP platform, along with the wording calling for a Human Life Amendment.
Go Fred go!
The Rockefeller coalition is a minority, but with conservatives split it’s strong enough to win a primary. NOT an election, though, as Ford found out and Bush 41 found out when he betrayed the fiscal and social conservatives.
The problem is that the conservatives in D.C. annointed Romney the conservative standard bearer out of desperation and bought comfort and have refused to budge. that in turn led to Thompson jumping in as the grassroots was unhappy, but because he wouldn’t kiss Dobson’s ring even though he’d be good on judges they went out and found a candidate only right on ONE issue. This has muddied the race considerably. Hopefully this endorsement, but more importantly the resources that come along with it, help untangle the mess in Thompson’s favor. Or else Rudy probably will be the nominee, lose, and maybe even drag down House and Senate candidates with him from lower turnout.
