NATIONAL RIGHT TO LIFE SHAKES UP RACE FOR REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION:
Nation’s largest pro-life group endorses Fred Thompson WASHINGTON – Marking the first major endorsement by a national grassroots organization in the Republican presidential contest, National Right to Life, the nation’s largest pro-life organization representing pro-lifers in fifty state affiliates and more than 3,000 local chapters, today announced its endorsement of former Senator Fred Thompson for President of the United States.
“As the first major grassroots organization to enter the Republican presidential race, National Right to Life is proud to endorse Fred Thompson,” stated Wanda Franz, Ph.D., president of National Right to Life. “Our endorsement is a testament to Senator Thompson’s long-standing pro-life record, his commitment to unborn children, and our belief in his ability to win.”
In making its endorsement, National Right to Life considered the position of candidates on the life issues, their records on the life issues and their ability to win.
Fred Thompson has had a strong, consistent pro-life record throughout his political career. Thompson opposes abortion and believes the 1973 abortion on demand Supreme Court decision was wrongly decided and must be reversed. During his eight years in the United States Senate, he always opposed using tax dollars to promote or pay for abortion and supported the many pro-life measures such as parental notice and consent.
Thompson has also stated his opposition to the kind of stem cell research that requires killing human embryos, while supporting the kind of stem cell research that harms no one and is the only kind producing cures.
Since announcing his candidacy in September, Fred Thompson has run second only to pro-abortion candidate Rudy Giuliani for the Republican nomination in the overwhelming majority of national polls. As pro-lifers throughout the nation begin to unite behind his candidacy, he will be well positioned to win the nomination and the presidency.
“Unlike endorsements by single individuals, this endorsement was made by representatives of statewide pro-life organizations across America which themselves are comprised of local community chapters and grassroots activists,” said Dr. Franz.
The National Right to Life Committee is the nation’s largest pro-life group with affiliates in all 50 states and over 3,000 local chapters nationwide. National Right to Life works through legislation and education to protect those threatened by abortion, infanticide, euthanasia and assisted suicide.
At a campaign stop in South Carolina, Thompson indicated that he had given Russert’s question more thought and sought to clarify his position. “I can run on the Republican Platform. ... I have a different priority in terms of how to achieve the same objective. I think Roe v. Wade should be changed with good judges following the law. … [E]ven when Republicans had control of the Senate, we could not move that (constitutional amendment) forward.”

A constitutional amendment banning abortion is not necessary. And it’s a waste of time and energy, because getting it passed would consume enormous amounts of both, and in the end it would probably fail.
The ERA failed, and that had a LOT of support in its day.
A constitutional amendment is not necessary, because there IS no constitutional right to an abortion. The answer to the liberal judges who have imposed their own selfish whims on the people in the guise of constitutional interpretation is not to pass a new constitutional amendment every time they make a vile decision. There’s no way you could keep up with them. It is to work on the culture, the voters, and the politicians until they are forced to nominate and confirm decent, honest judges and throw out that bogus piece of work, Roe v. Wade.
This whole constitutional amendment business is a red herring, pushed by people who want to look good but who know that it won’t pass.

In GOP Race, Last Week Was Kind to Romney, McCain, and Huckabee
To begin with, new data shows Thompson is no longer seen by Republican voters as the most conservative candidate in the field. Mitt Romney earns that title for the first time and Mike Huckabee is gaining quickly. Also, the full week results for the Rasmussen Reports Presidential Tracking Poll show Thompson’s support at the lowest level since May. Romney is tied with him now and McCain just a point behind. Huckabee once again remains within hailing distance of the others and maintains his double digit level of support.
According to RedState, the local grassroot chapters in districts and states made the decision. Which is VERY good news. That endorsement from the grassroots should mean willingness to go door to door, make the calls and send off the mailings without trying to sabotage the endorsed choice.
This is what Fred needs. A strong organization to rebut the come lately’s like Romney and or the Clintonesque candidates such as Huckabee on the issue and regain ground.

I have been wondering if Freddie Thompson might withdraw from the race and endorse McCain. He could complain, as Walter F. Mondale did in 1975, that he is tired of living in Holiday Inns. Many seem to think that Thompson lacks the fire in the belly.

Not sure why it is odd. New people have opinions too. I have read FR for years. Thought I would come on and join the fun. I started with Duncan Hunter, determined he could not win, I went with Thompson until he decided to take a week off after he started so late. And noticed he did not have the energy level needed to win the general election. A Bob Dole without the credentials. Now I am with Huckabee.
