Mitt tops Fred

The Washington Times
Stephan Dinan
12 November 2007

A new Rasmussen poll finds that voters see Mitt Romney as a conservative candidate more than Fred Thompson — the first time Thompson has not led on that measure.

In the last month the number of Republicans viewing Romney as conservative has jumped 10 points, to 46 percent, while Thompson has fallen 11 points, to 40 percent.

Here's the conservative rating for the top six Republican candidates:

Romney 46 percent
Thompson 40 percent
Huckabee 38 percent
McCain 28 percent
Giuliani 21 percent
Paul 16 percent

Looked at it from another angle, over 50% of Republicans think NONE of the top six Republican candidates are conservative. That’s the real story.

When asked about their stands on illegal immigration, the numbers shift dramatically.

Romney: A smart, articulate, Republican with broad national appeal who knows everything there is to know about meeting a payroll.

I trust his moderate conservatism, because he lives his personal life by impeccable conservative values.

We could do a heck of a lot worse.

When something is too good to be true, it generally isn’t. This data is too good to be true for Mitt the chameleon and it won’t last.

If the data is right, the electorate is misinformed which isn’t surprising considering we haven’t had a campaign yet. Let’s see if these numbers hold up after comparison advertising and actual voting start to focus voters’ minds.

Presumably this was posted to make Romney look strong. All it does, however, is highlight his weakness. When your support is grounded in a lie it has all the durability of a sand castle and it is liable to wash away on the next political tide.

I really like the tactic that Romney is using against Hillary's utter lack of executive experience and her mediocre term in the Senate. She's not run anything except her mouth and her record in the Senate is just plain weak. What is brilliant about these attacks is that the very same things can be said about Thompson. I know I'm not the first Republican to make that connection. He's attacking Fred's experience and yawn-inducing Senate record without coming out and hitting Fred in the face (which would draw some sympathy and make Romney look bad in the GOP primary). Brilliant. Romney is, by far, the most intelligent of the lot.

Where's the sarcasm tag? Oh, wait. (snicker, snicker) You actually believe the rubbish that you just posted. Isn't that special...

The only anti- anyone posts on this board are made by Romney or Hunter supporters bashing either everyone or Thompson specifically.

I don’t feel the need to bash Romney but to call him a true conservative, moreso than Thompson, is absurd and just shows that people don’t know what the ___ they are talking about.

Can he be the nominee and defeat Hitlery? Sure, and if that happens I’d support him. But I cannot honestly assess the man’s life and politics and say he is ‘conservative’ in the way Thompson is...

I just don’t get why the Hunter and Romney people feel the need to bash Thompson, often in a very personal way. Just drop the personal attacks.

HIGHLIGHT THE POSITIVE ABOUT YOUR CANDIDATE, do not endlessly criticize another candidate that could very well be your nominee.

This is a CRITICAL issue. Being seen as the most Conservative candidate is a HUGE leap forward for Mitt Romney.

An image like that can bring a boondoggle of support into the Romney camp.

BTW, this thread topic is an example of boosting your candidate positively.

Some of the posts made in it before anyone associated with another campaign even appear seem to indicate it was made for other reasons, which is sad.

Keep in mind only 46% see him as conservative. This isn't that Romney is even remotely strong on conservative values. It's that he is competing against even weaker candidates.

They should ask the question differently. They should ask, "Which candidate has the strongest conservative record?" Then ask, "Which candidate do you trust the most?"

Vote Hunter if you want a real conservative choice.

Pretty sad when your supporters are woohooing it because less than half of the voters in your own party perceive you as conservative. Really makes a case against him more than it does for him.

Duncan Hunter has the true credentials and has actually done more than any other politician when it comes to getting the border fence (double layered) in the San Diego/Mexican border. I wish his name recognition were higher - that’s his biggest negative. I would hope that he could get the nod for VP and then be in charge of those low-life senators and push for the border fence as head of the senate. Of course, if we don’t have the majority, it won’t matter.
