Giuliani's Hold on Lead Spot Is Eroding (Kerik, Reputed Mob Ties Hurting Him, Just As Predicted)
The New York Sun ^ | 11/12/2007 | Russell Berman

WASHINGTON — Mayor Giuliani's hold on the front-runner's perch in the Republican presidential nomination is eroding, with two new polls showing that Mitt Romney is opening up a widening lead in New Hampshire, site of the first primary.

While Mr. Giuliani has maintained his lead in national polls and in several state surveys, the former Massachusetts governor is now comfortably ahead in both Iowa and New Hampshire, two hotly contested early-voting states that have traditionally played a crucial role in determining the Republican nominee.

Mr. Romney opened up a 12-point lead over Mr. Giuliani in New Hampshire, 32% to 20%, in a Boston Globe/University of New Hampshire poll released yesterday. He leads in the state by 11 points in the latest Marist College poll, also released yesterday. Senator McCain of Arizona, who in an appearance yesterday on "Fox News Sunday" guaranteed a Granite State victory, is running third in both surveys.

The polls indicate that Mr. Romney has solidified his advantage and perhaps shifted the dynamic of the Republican race, after several surveys in September suggested Mr. Giuliani had closed the gap in New Hampshire. Mr. Romney has held a consistent double-digit lead since the summer in Iowa, where voters will cast the first presidential ballots in a caucus on January 3.

Guilliani was never going to survive scrutiny, and his team has been particularly unimpressive in running a competent campaign.

Romney is the antithesis. His team has been impressive. They knew from day one that scrutiny of his Governorship in the most liberal state of the country was going to yield attacks and they prepared for them and have answered them. Many are not satisfied with the answers, but being unsatisfied with answers is far superior to receiving no answers at all.

Romney is a good family man. Expect this to be attacked by Hillary. Her team is probably digging into the background of every woman Romney has ever been photographed with. Every secretary at Bain Capital is being researched. Every secretary at the Salt Lake Olympics is being tempted with money to manufacture a story. His superb family life will carry considerable weight against Hillary’s and the Hillary team will be desperate to weaken his strength in that regard.

It is this looking ahead and this methodical application of process that is so impressive about Romney’s campaign. He is, in the final analysis, the best candidate to face her because he is, simply, smarter than she is.

Romney’s not my favorite by far, but whatever it takes to knock out that corrupt, gun grabbing, draft dodging, abortionist, war profiteer Rudy JulieAnnie is fine by me,

Second!

Now there’s this thread yesterday that has Rudy saying nice things about Scotus Justice Ginsberg’s qualifications.

Before he was offically running for prez he thought he might make a nifty Senator from NY and at that time he often said that Ruth Bader Ginsburg was his idea of a great legal mind.

Of course NOW he's good buddies with ol' Sammy Alito and he's exactly the kind of man he'd nominate.

Since when do WE (Republicans) nominate Draft-dodgers and war protesters?
Since when do WE nominate Self-Professed Abortion Rights Activists?
Since when do WE nominate Gay Rights Avtivists?
Since when do WE nominate the most fervent of Gun-Grabbers?
Since when do WE nominate Unapologetic, serial philanderers?

Great post.

If you want to destroy the CONSERVATIVE IDENTITY of the Republican Party,,,,

a liberal like Giuliani is the RIGHT MAN AT THE RIGHT TIME!!

I like Giuliani’s leadership skills, his communication skills and his ability to get things done. He would be a good executive, in my opinion and if he’s the nominee, he’ll get my vote.

Tough spot for GOP. Giuliani has the best chance (so far) against Madame Hillary but his positions are fatally flawed. Romney has better positions, but is likely unelectable.

I agree with your statement. I don't think Romney is as electable as Giuliani versus Hillary. I like Thompson. However, if we look at who is most electable versus Hillary at this point, McCain is a better choice for republicans than Giuliani. However, he is not looking good in the primaries. It's going to be a tricky election for the GOP and for the Dems.

While Bush’s getting rid of Rumsfeld is a factor in Iraq “being righted” I think General Petraeus deserves more of the credit for what’s happening on the ground there than Rumsfeld’s removal.

I’m not thrilled with Romney. But, if he is the only one that can spare us Giuliani, so be it.

I’m still expecting Fred to knock Mitt back to third place and then slowly start to climb. Today’s news about him receiving the National Right To Life endorsement is going to get Thompson a lot of attention.

LOL I think you’re onto something. It would definitely draw an audience for the premiere of Rosie’s new show.

He is not my favorite, by a long shot, but we cannot tolerate a mobster in the White House. Rudy’s dad spent time in the Federal Pen for being a Mafia hit man. His uncle was even higher up. The Mob reportedly voted in favor of NOT going after Rudy.

You know, I don't want Giulliani to be elected either, but this is really unfair.

Yes, Rudy's dad was mob-connected, but the sins of the Father aren't passed down onto the son in this country.

And yes, he was derelict in his duty for not properly vetting Kerik. There's no excuse for that and it illustrates a lack of competence.

But there are few men in American who have done as much and risked as much to bring down the Mob as Rudy. He was the one who instigated the first successful RICO prosecutions against the New York families (c.f. the commission case). Dozens of mobsters are in jail thanks to his efforts as US attorney. John Gotti would never have been brought down were it not for him.

As mayor he got the mob out of the garbage collection business, and he got them out of the biggest wholesale fish market in America. He also tried to get them out of the construction business, but was stopped by the city council.

Rudy made a severe error in judgement in appointing Kerik, but that hardly invalidates his solid anti-mob record which has benefited New Yorkers far more than this one indiscretion.

Ok, I have a question for any and everybody. Huckabee, from what I have seen on the shows and I don’t get to watch them often, as appeared to be conservative to me. Am I wrong? My husband and I have discussed this and he likes Romney, which he seems fine to me. Giuliani, while I think that he would be tough on the terror/national security front, I think he’s too liberal on social issues.
Which candidate is the most conservative on both social issues and traditional values? Being from Indiana, our primary isn’t until May, so the candidate will already be long decided before I ever get to vote. Can you guys help?

Other than being Pro-Life, Huckabee has not in any way embraced Conservatism.

Simply do a Huckbee search on FR to learn more. He regularly caled for tax increases in Arkansas, believes strongly in amnesty, is very Social Libertarian on Social issues, and tried to get the taxpayers to foot the entire bill for college students (his “Free” tuition proposal).

Don’t be fooled by Huckabee. He is a Pro-Life Liberal.

He's pretty far to the left on economic issues.

I don’t think it makes you a conservative when you literally beg for new taxes:

Like FDT said, Huckabee is a “Pro-life liberal.”

I don’t think Rudy has a chance of beating Hillary. If he did, I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss him, even with all his flaws.

But the fact is that those who “support” him now will vote for Hillary when its him against her. He isn’t going to get the votes he gets in the primary from the liberals.

I don’t KNOW he’ll go down. If he had run against her for Senate, EITHER time, he would have been put through general election scrutiny and we could see how he stood up. As it is, I’m afraid there’s a lot of stuff out there that we know but is being held back by the media, to be used next September to destroy Rudy.

He speaks a good game, I caught him on some shows. I’m not certain I entirely believe his interpretation, and his record on the surface looks pretty bad.

And he IS more of the traditional social conservative, willing to use government to make things better for us — in other words, somewhat of a nanny-stater.

There has always been tension between the fiscal and social conservatives. When we were in the minority, it didn’t matter, as social conservatives hated what the democrats were spending money on and were therefore with the fiscal conservatives.

But in the majority, we had the faith-based initiatives, compassionate conservatism, and the idea that government spending was fine so long as it was for ‘good’ things.
