Collins's Odd Obsession
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Just two days ago, Gail Collins christened her column about the Pat Robertson endorsement "Pat Loves Rudy."

As I observed then, "a conservative columnist writing the equivalent might well be condemned for making an unsubtle appeal to homophobia. But Collins will surely get a pass in PC quarters, since it's a well-established fact that liberals are incapable of prejudice."

Then comes today's Collins column, and I'll be darned if she hasn't done it again. The NY Times columnist has entitled her piece about the Kerik indictment and related matters "Rudy and Bernie: B.F.F.’s" ["Best Friends Forever," for those no longer in middle school].

Liberals can insult every one and get away with it.

I notice that some freepers have been implying that they are BFFs, too.

It’s hard to resist, especially with that picture of Rudy hugging him from behind.

Of course, it should be said that expressing a personal opinion or joking around in a forum is rather different from posing as an important newspaper columnist.

I haven’t been a NYT reader for a few decades now, so I’d never heard of Collins till I read your reports. We leave ALL the heavy lifting to you, Mark.

Collins reminds me of THAT girl from elementary school. Smart-enough teacher’s pet that no one could stand, always busy showing off just how much she knows from lessons taught, as taught. It’s as if Collins is in a NYT echo chamber. She repeates what they are saying elsewhere in the paper and editorial rooms. But since she is saying the right things according to the teacher/editor, she continues to be the teacher’s pet/media darling.
