LGF reader Shiplord Kirel alerts us to some very interesting excerpts at Free Republic from the old Ron Paul newsletter, being posted by a Freeper over the objections of the site’s Paulians. The excerpts are from the mid 80s to the late 90s:

Ron Paul supported the PLO terrorists (1985) Ron Paul: Israel bought Jesse Helms (1985) Ron Paul: Traitor had direct line to President Reagan (1992, refers to commie business collaborator Armand Hammer) RON PAUL ON DEFENSE SPENDING (1992, sounds like Ramsey Clark) Ron Paul: Clinton didn’t cut defense enough (1993) Ron Paul: US “military is mowing civilians down in the streets” (1993, refers to Somalia) RON PAUL ACCUSED U.S. TROOPS OF WAR CRIMES IN DESERT STORM (1991, this one repeats Ramsey Clark’s allegations almost verbatim)

I plan to follow your lead when my strangely Dem brother (who is a retired USAF Colonel and F-111, F-15 pilot) starts on politics.

I blame McGovern for the brother’s leanings. I think he should jump on the Kucinich bandwagon and I will work on that over Thanksgiving while he is here.

There is definitely something not so good, in the water of Lake Erie.

“Those (anti-semitic anti-WOT) associates include Patrick Buchanan and others such as Charley Reese.”

Add to that Ron Smith a talk radio guy from here in Baltimore. Don’t quite understand these “conservatives” who think that throwing Israel under the bus, is a good thing for America.

You were right. I just emailed Chris Peden, former staffer of Paul’s that is mounting a campaign against him - http://www.chrispeden.org/ - with this information.

Not one to let the truth of the issue get in your way, are you?

Ron Paul 1996 Election Controversy

In 1996, Paul was re-elected to Congress after a tougher battle than he had faced in the 1970s. Since the Republicans had taken over both houses of Congress in the 1994 election, Paul entered the race hopeful that his Constitutionalist goals of shrinking government size would have more influence,[33] but he quickly concluded "there was no sincere effort" toward his goals.[13] The Republican National Committee focused instead on encouraging Democrats to switch parties, as Paul's primary opponent, incumbent Greg Laughlin, had done in 1995. The party threw its full weight behind Laughlin, including support from House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Texas Governor George W. Bush, and the National Rifle Association. Paul responded by running newspaper ads quoting Gingrich's harsh criticisms of Laughlin's Democratic voting record 14 months earlier.[38] Paul won the primary with support from baseball pitcher, constituent, and friend Nolan Ryan (who served as honorary campaign chair and made ad appearances) and tax activist Steve Forbes.[9][32]

Paul's Democratic opponent in the fall election, trial lawyer Charles "Lefty" Morris, lost in a close margin, despite assistance from the AFL-CIO. Paul's large contributor base outraised Morris two-to-one, giving the third-highest amount of individual contributions received by any House member (behind Gingrich and Bob Dornan).[50] It became the third time Paul had been elected to Congress as a non-incumbent.[9]

Morris ran numerous attacks, including publicizing issues of the Ron Paul Survival Report (published by Paul since 1985) that included politically incorrect comments concerning race and other politicians.[51][52] Citing reports that 85 percent of all black men in the District of Columbia are arrested, the Report stated that "Given the inefficiencis of...'the criminal justice system', we can safely assume that 95% of the black males in Washington DC are semi-criminal or entirely criminal", that "The criminals who terrorize our cities--in riots and on every non-riot day--are not exclusively young black males, but they largely are" and that "Black men commit murders, rapes, robberies, muggings, and burglaries all out of proportion to their numbers."[53] According to a 1992 study, an estimated 70 percent of Black males in the District of Columbia are arrested before the age of 35, and 85 percent will be arrested sometime during their lives.[54][55] Paul's newsletter had also accused President Bill Clinton of fathering illegitimate children and using cocaine; called U.S. Representative Barbara Jordan a "fraud" and a "half-educated victimologist"; and argued for lowering the legal age for prosecuting youths as adults, using race-based examples.[56]

In 2001, Paul took "moral responsibility" for the comments printed in his newsletter under his name, telling Texas Monthly magazine that the comments were written by a ghostwriter[57] and did not represent his views. He said the remarks referring to Rep. Jordan were "the saddest thing, because Barbara and I served together and actually she was a delightful lady."[32][57] The magazine defended Paul's decision to protect the writer's confidence in 1996, concluding, "In four terms as a U.S. congressman and one presidential race, Paul had never uttered anything remotely like this."[32] In 2007, with the controversy resurfacing,[58] the New York Times Magazine concurred that Paul denied the allegations "quite believably, since the style diverges widely from his own";[9]

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are many legitimate issues why people may disagree with and oppose Ron Paul -- "being against a return to the gold standard", "being against abolishing the IRS", "believing in a stronger centralized government",etc., but this newsletter non-issue is just pure nonsense.

Is that an opinion or fact about Ron Paul? To me it shows how gullible Americans are in believing the lies the Press and these campaigns put out there to them. If America looked at the big picture they would see a group of individuals with phony resumes and ones that are controlled by special interest and to hell with the average American.
Right now these same people are looking at ways to screw the Americans on Social Security the way they have since the 1980’s but yet they protect their pensions .Their spouses even collect millions after they die. It is a known fact recipients of SS have been messed over in the way their inflation raises have been calculated but yet Congress raises their pay 4.5% every year. Do I trust any of them, hell no. If the average American came to his senses and rebelled then both parties would come together and create a dictatorship. If you think Ron Paul is a nut job and the rest are honorable people the you are as big a nut as you think Ron Paul is.

After they spend a couple of terms in Congress they all become crooks because that is the only way to get anything done because of the clout the leadership carries.
