My folks don’t tip - if the server needs more money they should go to their boss not expect the public to pay their wages. He also mentioned the tradition of tipping started around the time of the civil war.Thus, his/her folks lived before the civil war.

Oh, Skydancer btw it is an accepted practice (I don't think it is fair) to pay wait staff way under the minimum wage because their tips bring them over it. The IRS requires that people employed as wait staff claim 8% of their wages for tips.
