It's a story of incredible courage and unwavering faith of a military family here.
Despite suffering an unimaginable loss, a wounded soldier and his wife are standing strong as they prepare to bury the last of their three young children.
Army SPC Austin Johnson was undergoing treatment at Brooke Army Medical Center for a brain injury suffered in Iraq when he was hit with another blow. Johnson was waiting for a visit from his family when he learned, they wouldn't be coming. They'd been involved in a horrible crash as they drove to see him. Now, Johnson is preparing to bury the last of his three children.
Johnson and his wife Lisa lost 9-year-old Tyler, 5-year-old Ashley, and 2-year-old Logan. The younger two children died just seconds after the car crash in mid-October. Their eldest fought bravely, but died Saturday.
"They're handling it well considering the circumstances. The first two were the hardest because of the initial shock. And this one here, he's been at the bedside every day talking to him the best he could preparing himself a little bit better and the family," said Sgt. Eugene Schmidt.
The accident happened near the West Texas town of Ozona when their SUV crashed and rolled over.
In the Arkansas community where the family once lived, Tyler's classmates came together to remember a friend whose soldier dad once visited their school.
"It was very shocking and very, very devastating to see someone that you knew and a family that you knew go through something so horrible," said a Arkansas woman who knew the Johnson family.
Lisa Johnson survived the accident, but as Sgt. Schmidt prepared to leave to go to Tyler's funeral, he said she and her husband are now trying to survive emotionally.
"Her and John are together. So they're holding in there and leaning on each other and leaning on the church," Sgt. Schmidt told News 4. "And the Army's helping out a lot with a lot of support, and a lot of non-profit organizations have come together to help out."
Tyler Johnson will be laid to rest Tuesday.
Johnson with return to San Antonio for more medical care at BAMC after that.
A memorial fund has been set up by the USO in Dallas. You can donate at any Bank of America location under the Ashley and Logan Johnson Memorial Fund.

This is a heart wrencher. It’s unfathomable..such loss. .
I really hope they can stick together through this. Many marriages don’t survive the death of one child, imagine the strain of losing all your posterity in one swoop.
It seems that the kids got the worst of it in accidents, regardless of the measures taken.
May they never know sorrow.
Yes, you are so right. It is the saddest story I have ever read.
Here are some more comments from yesterday’s thread on the story:

All I can think of is the story of Job.
May God hold these people closely and give them great hope and joy through the tears.
The BUZZ is all about Briney Spears losing custody...how far we've strayed.
God bless this family.

~Prayers~ I can not even begin to imagine the pain they are suffering. God Bless them & keep them strong.
