“the federal government should not be involved.” Thompson added, “the less government the better.” ...

I couldn't agree more.
The excruciating, two-week murder of Terri Schiavo should have been stopped by Governor Jeb Bush.

I hope this posting doesn’t reopen old wounds. I could not understand why the husband couldn’t have just let the parents care for Teri. But he didn’t.

I don’t think it is the business of the federal govt to get involved. I am sorry. That’s why we have state courts and the 10th amendment.

Conservatives cannot have it both ways. We cannot expect the govt to keep out of our wallets and then get involved with something as personal as this.

You are forgetting a crucial component: husband and parents had competing POV’s regarding her care.

That said the State had to intervene and intervened wrongly. The state must always rule in favor of life.

Lancey, I’m with you. The Terry Schaivo case was bungled by the State of Florida and in the State of Florida, from the county level to the State level and back. The outcome was an outrage against human dignity and life. All true.

Yet, the answer Fred Thompson gave on Sixty Minutes was correct, even if it could have been expanded upon.

The harsh truth is that Federalism means that States can and will make mistakes, and the Federal government ought to and must stand aside.

“The excruciating, two-week murder of Terri Schiavo should have been stopped by Governor Jeb Bush.”

Either the Governor or the President had the power to pardon someone sentence to death by the courts. That power exists to give the executive branch the moral authority to intervene in order to prevent a miscarriage of justice.

That is exactly what Terri Sciavo’s case was.

Thompson is right.

You are right. Jeb Bush should have stepped in and investigated the criminal actions of the judge in the case.

Everybody involved won, except Terri and her family.

ditto and bttt

exactly. He should have sent the state police, or called out the national guard if necessary.

Jeb Bush should have done the right thing. Instead, he wimped out.

Dittos.

This is two threads now with titles implying that Thompson is finished because of something he said, yet most of the posters strongly agree with what he said. Is it a tongue in cheek thing?
