GREELEY, Colo. -- Retired police officer Ed Clark ousted Mayor Tom Selders by a wide margin Tuesday after a hard-fought campaign that often centered on illegal immigration.
Clark had 61 percent of the votes to Selders' 39 percent in unofficial final results.
Immigration is a heated issue in Greeley, where a raid by federal immigration agents in December rounded up about 260 Swift & Co. meatpacking plant workers.
Selders has said such raids create community turmoil that could be avoided with better policies. He was criticized for traveling to Washington in May to discuss the impact of the raids.
A group called the Colorado Alliance for a Secure America distributed a campaign mailer accusing Selders of advocating "instant U.S. citizenship" for undocumented workers.
Another group, called the Alliance for a Better Greeley, distributed a mailer accusing Selders of not cracking down enough on gangs.
The Greeley Tribune reported Selders was not available for comment late Tuesday.
Clark has said he had nothing to do with the fliers and said he would have won the election whether or not they had appeared.
Clark called his victory "a clear mandate by the people that it's time for a change." He said he will try to foster quality economic growth.
Bye Bye, Mr. open border mayor.
Hopefully the first of many to be shown the door.
If this portends the feelings of Coloradoans at large, Colorado may not be as “in play” for the Dimocrats in ‘08 as they seem to think it is.
The pro-illegal incumbent was defeated 3 to 2.
"It's not the economy, stupid."
Denver is pretty upset with their mayor as well since aliens killed a couple police officers there.
“61 percent to 39 percent “
He kicked his cornholio.

Even Liberal Oregon gets it!
Poll shows immigration becoming top concern for Oregonians
Asked to name the most important issue state officials should tackle, illegal immigration ranked second only to education. Next on the list was affordable health care.
lol....yes he did.
Tom Selders was apparently a liberal Republican (and preferred endorsing Democrats, such as Stan Matsunaka for Congress).
This was a single issue race. The ex-mayor was well liked until he cast his lot with the illegals.
There is a real live message in the results of this election.
On the contrary, a big part of the objection to illegals is economic. It's about the jobs they cost citizens and their effect on wages, the taxes they cost for education and health care, the costs of identity theft and other crimes illegals commit, etc.
California gets it!

A new survey reveals that more Californians are talking about immigration than ever before. Also, the survey shows that immigration may play a mjaor role in California’s gubernatorial election.
The new Public Policy Institute of California poll shows immigration is now the second most important issue for state voters, right behind education. Among Republicans, it’s number one.
Tom Selders or Mike Huckabee? Same thing
“Denver is pretty upset with their mayor as well since aliens killed a couple police officers there.”
Yes, an illegal alien that worked in Hizzoner’s restaurant.
And the national GOP had better be paying attention. This issue has struck a nerve in the electorate. It could super-charge the campaign of many 'Pub candidates if they play it right. Tag the 'Rat candidates as pro-illegal, tie in the Eliot Spitzer illegals license debacle, and just ride it as far as it will go. I have a feeling that could be a looooong way.
These compassionate politicians need to pay attention!
This is from 2005.....but did they listen???

That earlier survey found that 75% of Americans consider immigration to be a somewhat or very important voting issue.
Already, 29% of Americans nationally consider immigration a more important voting issue than Iraq.
True, but in a different sense than the original Clinton-era statement.
Many are simply angered over the crime, the arrogant attitude, the traffic accidents (usually drunk driving), etc.
These have economic impact, but the core issue itself is illegal immigration. Many Americans feel that their way of life is being flushed down the toilet of expedience.
Thanks to the MinuteMen, who brought this to the forefront in so few years.
Do I recall correctly that the Mayor (Heckenlooper or something like that) owns part of that restaurant?
One down, many more to go. I hope the lesson is heeded at RNC HQ.
