Official at Children's Museum Is Charged in Child Pornography Case

By Mary Beth Sheridan and Jerry Markon Washington Post Staff Writers

Wednesday, November 7, 2007; B01

A senior executive at the National Children's Museum was arrested yesterday and charged with distributing child pornography over the Internet, officials said.

Robert A. Singer, 49, a married father of two who lives in Falls Church, was suspended from his job as chief operating officer and barred from the museum.

"We are horrified by the charges," museum officials said in a written statement.

According to a complaint filed in Manhattan federal court, Singer sent images of naked children, some in sexual acts with adults, five times in August to a New York City police detective posing both as a mother and her 12-year-old daughter. He struck up the correspondence through an AOL chat room called Cuties, known for exchanges of pornography, the complaint alleges.

The complaint says Singer, using the name Badboy2at, wrote in one instant message intended for the mother: "luv trading pics of cuties. like to trade some?" He also wrote that it was a "pleasure to meet a fellow luver of younger erotica," the complaint says.

Authorities said they got a search warrant to review Singer's AOL account and determined that he sent about 80 images of child pornography from July through September, including those to the detective. He also allegedly received about 10 images and one video of child pornography during that time.

Singer was arrested at his home by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and charged with five counts of distributing child pornography in interstate commerce. A message left on the answering machine at his residence was not returned.

Employees at the museum said they were stunned.

While the court must presume him innocent before proven guilty, it sounds like the feds have him dead on.

Just like a serial bank robber can't resist robbing yet another bank, it shouldn't surprise anybody that these pedophiles seek jobs and positions that put them into close proximity to kids.

Anyways...the hardened convicts in the federal pen will know how to deal with him if he gets his "short eyes" label.

Is this guy not an American citizen? Why would ICE be arresting somebody on an interstate child porn charge?

It is likely that some of the images originated or were sent internationally. That may be enough to create jurisdiction.

The huge majority of sex offenders serve their time in a segretated unit, get out, go home and reoffend. If you don't believe that just take a look at your local sex offender registry.

It’s in the script they wrote long ago. I don’t know if your read newsbusters.org but they do a great job of tracking every instance of this.

You know years back I would have believed that but it seems like anymore there are so many of this d*m* kind that those in prison are probably into it also.

I wonder if he is a relative or brother of Peter Singer the man who advocates killing infants up to the age of two. The one who holds a chair at Princton.

He also was from overseas, Australia, I think.

Be interesting if true...one wants to kill children and the other wants to f-— them.

Somebody who’s given a couple thousand dollars? I seriously doubt it. I actually used to be a newspaper and wire service reporter and I know I wouldn’t have included it.

If he HAD been a GOP-er would you still want the affiliation in the story?

“I used to be a newspaper and wire service reporter.”

To quote Tony Snow at the recent Media Institute’s Freedom of Speech Awards: A vigorous press must be one in which reporters challenge their own sympathies and assumptions as aggressively as they challenge the sympathies and assumptions of others. Unfortunately, that too seldom happens, with the consequence that opinion-mongering has driven out straight news.

“...would you still want the affiliation in the story?” I would think consistent full disclosure is appropriate
