During this Presidential pre-Primary and Caucus season, we are evaluating who the best Conservative man for the job is. Many of us have expressed support for Fred Thompson as the most viable Conservative candidate. And of those of us who have, I have seen many express a noticable preference for Duncan Hunter, who in fairness we have deemed not be looking viable at this time.
While there is still time, I would like to suggest a reasoned strategy to help create buzz for the best candidate out there. What I have in mind would continue until the mid to last part of December. Then at that time we could re-evaluate what the status is, and continue our effort or move our support to the more viable candidate.
I do not want to drag down a good man. I don't want to continue to support a lost cause. I don't want to split the Conservative vote at Primaries and Caucuses. So this does need to be handled in a timely planned manner.
At this point in time it seems to me the two most important questions should be, in our heart of hearts who is the best Conservative candidate with the most consistant record over the last few decades, and how best can we help that candidate achieve more visibility and there-by traction?
From my observation, Congressman Duncan Hunter is the most tested long term Conservative candidate on the radar. As mentioned earlier, Hunter is barely on that radar, but he is there. And acknowledging his presence and credentials, it seems a must for me to mention that we have the ability to help the man. And that being the case, I think we should.
It is important to Conservatism's principles that we create the maximum buzz for Hunter that we can. We should talk him up whenever possible. We should provide a link to his site whenever possible. And we should be ready to explain our own persoal top five reasons we support him, on a moments notice. We should do it on this forum. We should do it on other conservative sites. Whenever there is a poll, I want to urge folks to vote for Hunter. I still believe that he can catch on if our members will spread the good word far and wide. And Hunter is the good word this pre-election season.
I do want to acknowledge an important issue before I end these comments. Fred Thompson is an important viable and supportable fall back position to Duncan Hunter. It is important that when we get the word out about Hunter, that we make sure to mention that Fred Thompson is also a good man, a man we will gladly vote for if we need to.
Ideally, I would love to see a Hunter/Thompson ticket. Being realistic, we may have to settle for a Thompson/Hunter ticket. Well, that's a ticket every Conservative should be able to support in good concience. And the best way to get that ticket, is to spend some time talking Hunter's numbers up.
Don't settle for my five good reasons to support Hunter. Go to his site and determine your own best five reasons, the ones most important to you.
Then go out there and talk him up and keep Fred front and center too. These are good men folks. As Freepers we should be proud to support either one. I still think Hunter is the solid choice, if Conservatism is the guidepost.
Those of you who do not support Hunter or Thompson, I'm not here to convert you. If you can't see the value in these men, I understand. I would ask that you develop your own thread to talk up you candidate, and not spend time here talking down ours. No offense intended. Take care.

No, you nick is isn’t going to scare someone off. Hunter is well grounded on immigration. He’s your man. That’s one of the reasons why he’s mine.
I think many people here have sworn off RINOs for life. After watching ‘our own guy’ dismantle conservatism in a number of ways, it’s become too evident what the cost is. Those days have come to an end for us.

Which puts him in 8th place...just behind “no opinion”. Kidding aside, though skeptical, that qualifies as a trend. Let’s wait for one or two more poll cycles, before taking this seriously though. Also Newsweek only has him at 2%, and USA Today at 1%.
I still seriously doubt Duncan Hunter will be a player after the 1st or 2nd set of primaries. Till then, I think I’ll start a Draft Dick Cheney movement. My campaign slogan????.... “Don’t Bicker....He’s got a Weak Ticker” Anyway he’s a great conservative.... see how badly the libs hate him?
I think you’re absolutely correct - Hunter IS the Conservative in this race and just because he isn’t as well-known or entrenched in the process as the others, that doesn’t mean he can’t win.
Last nite I witnessed a case in point.
Indianapolis’s 2-term Mayor - a truly awful democrat who everyone thought would win again - was overturned by a good man who has never held public office. Republican Greg Ballard won because people here were sick and tired of liberal policies that have been damaging to our city.
Mayor-Elect Ballard had no support from the Republican party here until the end of last week when it became clear that he was really in the running. The incumbent democrat was flush with cash and commercials and corrupt buddies in positions of power. All his money and power didn’t win him the election because of the huge turnout of concerned citizens.
The headlines in the Indianapolis Star today are calling this the biggest upset in the history of Indiana politics!
Ballard’s victory should serve as proof to conservatives that the grassroots can rise up and sweep even a previously ‘unknown’ candidate to victory.
I am a Conservative and I will be supporting Duncan Hunter for President.

Better get used to those words, because you are going to hear them for at least four years if you do not vote for our party's nominee, whoever that might be.
But what is the difference between Hillary and Rudy? At least Hillary has never cross-dressed (in front of a camera, anyway.) However, there are the rumors of a lesbian relationship with Huma. Honestly, what’s the difference between the two candidates? I can’t identify one.
I think a lot of people could identify with your comments. My take on the subject of the base, is that if you promote good conservative values, they’ll transend party affiliations. That was Ronald Reagan’s big plus. His seemingly honest approach and reasoned appeal on key issues, made him very popular.
His love of the nation and trust in people rather than big government made him more like one of us than those who had spent their lives in the body politic since graduating college.
Reagan had actually worked for a living. He may not have been able to in actuality, but the perception was that he could identify with those who worked for a living. And it seemed like he could understand their needs and that he didn’t dismiss their views as not pertaining to the direction our nation was heading.
How many times have our views been dismissed on importaint issues, as if those of children in a pre-school by our elected officials?
Look at the border. Look at parent’s rights. Look at education. I could go on, but we’re in a serious world of hurt and our present guy is MIA.
Good bedrock values aren’t the sole property of the right.
I think Hunter and Thompson get it. As they hone their message over the next few months, I’m hoping they’ll get it right.

I agree with your comments. I understand where you are coming from, and I just wish more candidates did. Hunter and Thompson seem to get it. I hope others can see that.

Unfortunately the strategy by Duncan supporters seems to be to dump on Thompson, meanwhile Huckebee is scooping up a lot of social conservative support.

I have never had a chance to dig much deeper. When I asked the question of him in the FR "Ask Duncan thread" (which only he has been brave enough to do so far), he offered to cut the National Endowment of the Arts (aka whipping boy though deservedly so) and to support Bush's recommended cuts (I paraphrase). To me that is not enough.

The economy has expanded for 50 straight months, a record, and is due to take some serious backsteps over the next year or two (price of oil/gas, Iraq/Iran/Syria, cutting down the number of illegals, inflation, etc.). If a rat is in office for the economic mess we're venturing towards, combined with the rats' sick obsession with tax increases, punishing business, "taking away profits from oil companies", etc., they'll destroy the economy. The rats will get blamed and a conservative will once again have to come to the rescue.
The next rescue though, unlike Reagan's, will never be forgotten. The daily reminder on cable TV of the economic mess and hardships caused by the rats will be viewed throughout the rat rule. Afterwards, with the age of internet and current communications, noboby alive during the mess will ever be allowed to forget it.
Flame away if you wish, but rather than the slow slither down the rat hole, with RINO after RINO allowing the incremental implementation of the socialist agenda only getting worse, unless folks in their 20's, 30's and 40's today, are taught a valuable lesson on the differences between conservatives and liberals. Elections matter.
Note to republicans: You want my vote in the general election (and campaign cash) give me a conservative or forget it. I'm a conservative long before I'm a republican.
