Republicans sweep in Philly suburbs
Philly.com ^ | November 6, 2007 | Anthony R. Wood

Withstanding strong challenges from the Democrats, Republicans claimed all three available council seats in Delaware County and were leading in key races that would allow them to retain control of county governments.

They apparently had won two commissioners' posts in Chester County, and were leading in races that would assure them majorities on the Bucks and Montgomery commissions.

Meanwhile, an $87 million open-space referendum in Bucks County was winning by a 3-to-1 ratio.

Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce Castor and fellow Republican Jim Matthews - with 80 percent of the vote in - were leading in the county commissioners race, with former Democratic congressman Joe Hoeffel coming in third.

Republicans Carol Aichele and Terence Farrell were leading in the commissioners's races in Chester County, with 57 percent of the precincts reporting.

In the Bucks commissioners' races, with 86 percent of the districts reporting, Republican Jim Cawley was leading, followed by Democrat Diane Marseglia and Republican Charles H. Martin, who were divided by a narrow margin.

Overall, turnout was light.

"As far as I can tell the turnout has been incredibly light and that does not bode well for Democrats in Delaware County," was an early analysis by Frank Daly, 58, the former Media mayor who was defeated in his run for a Common Pleas judgeship.

The situation was similar in Bucks, particularly in some Democratic strongholds, said former Republican congressman Mike Fitzpatrick. "A suppressed Democratic turnout is not good for the Democratic county commissioners," he said.

The Democrats, perennial minorities in the suburbs, entered the campaign season with high ambitions. The party had made big gains in suburban registrations, and was looking to capitalize on public dissatisfaction with the Bush administration's conduct of the Iraq war.

The Republicans, however, banking on what surveys showed to be a general satisfaction with the quality of services, apparently prevailed impressively.

A Democratic victory in any of the suburban counties would be considered historic. Democrats have not had majority power in Montgomery County in 138 years, and have been shut out in Chester County for 148.

The light turnout, however, did not bode well for the challengers.

The Democratic party has made big gains in suburban registrations, and was looking to capitalize on public dissatisfaction with the Bush administration's conduct in the Iraq war, while the Republicans banked on what surveys showed to be a general satisfaction with the quality of services.

Democrats had big ambitions in Delaware County. David Landau, 54, had been given a good chance of winning one of the three council seats up for grabs. No Democrat has had a seat since 1980, when a charter change ended guaranteed minority-party representation.

That tradition will continue.

FYI, Jim Matthews is the brother of MSNBC's Chris Matthews.

This was a nasty and expensive campaign and Democrats were bragging all year long that they were going to win big all through these three counties. Didn't happen. Dems get to wake up tomorrow and realize they can't run against George W. Bush and Iraq anymore.

And in my heavily Republican precinct in Bucks County, turnout was good. Democrats utterly failed to turn out all thes new voters they claimed to have registered in the last two years.

I also forgot to mention that Mike Fitzpatrick led the campaign for the open space referendum which won hugely. This will bode well or him if he decides to run for Congress again. He ran a better campaign for this referendum than he ran last year for Congress. Hopefuly he has learned something.

LOL you just can't expect to win county commission races if you are running against the President and the war. Should have tried taxes, zoning etc. Dems are sure stuck on stupid.

Dems are sure stuck on stupid.

Unfortunately, about 50% of the voters for national elections are also in that same state......

Last week a Democrat door to door solicitor visited and gave me some printings. Then thought to ask if I would vote Democrat, I said “no way!” She grabbed the pamphlets out of my hand, and walked away. I should have said, “not until the Democrat party has candidates who are not commie loving, America hating, pathological liars!”

It looks like dimocrat Joe Hoeffel prevailed over Matthews (R) but not by much - 356 votes, unofficially. With 100% of the vote in -— please see post #10.

I would bet on a recount in that race. Hoeffel spent a million dollars on a county commissioners campaign and 80% of it was lies.

Dems had to win two seats in Montgomery and Bucks to gain control of the county commissions. They only won one in each. GOP swept all seats in Chester County.

Please . . . not Hoeffel!!! Arghhhhh.

Our part of Montco has tended to go increasingly Dem in recent years; don't know how turnout was in our area. I didn't see many folks at my polling place, but it was mid-morning and typically light.

That's how stupid the Democrat polticians consider the voters - - they try to get freaking county commissioners elected based on the war in Iraq! I saw a goofball lib in Richboro today with a t-shirt that proclaimed "Vote For Change". Stupidity oozed from the corners of her mouth. These goofballs expect people to vote for change for (apparently) no particular reason.

Interestingly Matthews (R) led Hoeffel (D) up until the very last minutes.

Normally the Dem base is in eastern Montgomery Cty. and is the first to be reflected in the polling numbers. Western Montco. which is predominately GOP is generally the last to be reflected in the election results. This is obviously not what has happened this election!

I wonder where those 1,000+ votes came from in the last minutes to put Hoeffel over the top?
