GOP Forces Debate on Cheney Impeachment
AP via SFGate ^ | 11/6/7 | JIM ABRAMS, Associated Press Writer

House Republicans, changing course midway through a vote, tried to force Democrats into a debate on a resolution to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney on the grounds he purposely led the country into war against Iraq.

The GOP tactics reversed what had been expected to an overwhelming vote to table, or kill, the resolution by longshot Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich.

Midway through the vote, with instructions from the GOP leadership, Republicans one by one changed their votes from yes — to kill the resolution — to no, trying to force the chamber into a debate and an up-or-down vote on the proposal.

At one point there were 290 votes to table. After the turnaround, the final vote was 251-162 against tabling, with 165 Republicans voting against it.

"We're going to help them out, to explain themselves," said Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas. "We're going to give them their day in court."

Kucinich, an anti-war Democrat from Ohio, has long pushed for a vote to impeach Cheney, but has failed to win the backing of the Democratic leadership. After Kucinich introduced the resolution, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., immediately moved to table it.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi "has said that impeachment is off the table and that the new direction Congress is focused on responsibly and honorably redeploying our troops out of Iraq, covering 10 million uninsured children and meeting our national priorities long neglected by the Bush Administration,"

Yeah that’s rubbish but the fact of the matter is that someone was betting on the airlines’ stock going down into the toilet and bought hefty shares of puts on the matter.

And I’ve yet to hear the details of any investigation on that.

This is the Pete Sessions I remember, when he was my Congressman four years ago.

I went DUmpster diving for you:

....
Could someone correct me if I am wrong, PLEASE. But that is what it looked like to me too. Why are the Dems voting to table and the Rep. to proceed? Only 28 Rep. voting to table! There must be a logical explanation, but I don’t see it.

....
What is the GOP up to? I don’t trust them one bit.

....
It is pretty obvious....they are betting the Dems don’t have the guts.. ...to go through with it. They want the bill debated and voted on. They are forcing our hand. They think they can split the Dems by doing this while getting their base to rally around the leader. The only way this will backfire on them is if ALL the Dems now vote in favor of impeachment. Call your representative NOW and make sure they know you want them to do the right thing.

NOW is the time!!!

....
Illegal spying got something really dirty on Pelosi,,,,and that is why she is protecting these CRIMINALS. Bet they got something on every single Democrat, Independent and even Republicans that they need to control like good little Nazies.

....
Is this a good thing? Seems to me that impeachment charges must be before the Judiciary Committee. But the world seems turned upside down...the repubs are against tabling the motion but also against referring to the Judiciary committee. Im confused. Anybody help me out here?

....
The Repubs obviously think debating this works in their favor. They don’t get it that the country knew Clinton’s crime was not impeachable, while Cheney’s will be their ultimate nightmare. G%$-damned spineless Democrats! Hammer these f%$king war criminals for their crimes!

....
Who do we have on the Dem side who will debate this that will rip them to shreds?

....

Oh please, Brer Fox, please don't throw me into the briar patch!

Midway through the vote, with instructions from the GOP leadership

Who? I want to know who so I can personally congratulate him on recovering his testicles from Hilary's lock box. This is awesome!

KOS is just as funny. If it's dawned on any of them yet that the Republicans are demanding that these chronically vague charges be made concrete enough to debate on, it isn't obvious. The problem with being a doctrinaire lefty is that there are certain suppositions you must hold in order to be given a voice. It is those suppositions that will now be taken under examination.

We call our first witness, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi:

“As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, I am keenly aware that the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons is an issue of grave importance to all nations. Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process.”

....

We call our second witness, President Clinton:

“CLINTON: Good evening.

Earlier today, I ordered America’s armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces. Their mission is to attack Iraq’s nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors.

The hard fact is that so long as Saddam remains in power, he threatens the well-being of his people, the peace of his region, the security of the world.

The best way to end that threat once and for all is with a new Iraqi government — a government ready to live in peace with its neighbors, a government that respects the rights of its people.”

Oh - this is RICH!!!

The Repubs are finally getting it - the way to defeat these Democrats is to expose them for the kooks that they are.

Many of the “grownups” in the Democrat party understand this too.

“Oh please, Brer Fox, please don’t throw me into the briar patch!”

A beautiful analogy that Democrats would not understand since they banned “Uncle Remus”, “Song of the South”, and “Huck Finn”, too! Hey! They use the n-word!

At first I thought Moe was saying that they bought “shorts” on the World Trade Center before 9/11.

But... he didn’t sounds smart enough to understand what a “short” was.

I am amused by how dishonest this AP article is. The text says "House Republicans...tried to force Democrats into a debate..." and "Republicans...trying to force the chamber into a debate and an up-or-down vote on the proposal." One might wonder why AP never admits that the Republicans succeeded.
