Former President Clinton on Monday compared Republican criticism of his wife's position on driver's license for illegal immigrants to the ads that helped sink John Kerry's White House hopes in 2004.
"I had the feeling that at the end of that last debate we were about to get into cutesy land again," Clinton told some 3,000 members of the American Postal Worker's Union at a convention.
At the end of a televised Democratic presidential debate last week, Hillary Rodham Clinton hedged on whether she supported a plan by her home state governor, New York's Eliot Spitzer, to issue licenses to illegal immigrants. Republicans _ and her rivals for the Democratic nomination _ quickly criticized her answer, accusing her of trying to have it both ways.
But Bill Clinton said the issue is too complicated for sound bites. "It's fine for Hillary and all the other Democrats to discuss Governor Spitzer's plan. But not in 30 seconds _ yes, no, raise your hand," he said. The former president told the union members not to let the Republican attacks distract them from the important issues of health care and education reform.
He compared the driver's license dustup to television ads during the 2004 presidential campaign that questioned Kerry's patriotism, and campaign commercials in 2002 suggesting that former Sen. Max Cleland, D-Ga., who lost three limbs in Vietnam, was soft on terrorism. Clinton urged the union members to vote Democratic for president no matter who the party nominates.
"So do I hope you vote for my wife? You bet I do. It'd be good for America, and good for the world. But, more than that I came here to tell you today, don't you dare let them take this election away from you. This belongs to you." Clinton also was to speak later Monday at a rally for his wife at the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy.
In what is a rare consensus issue that unites all parts of the political spectrum, Democrats and Republicans alike agree that Ny Gov Spitzer's ill-conceived plan to license illegal aliens has had vast repercussions, not the least of which include:
* Seriously damaging Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign, as demonstrated in last week's Democratic presidential debate.
* Helped guarantee blowout GOP wins in hotly fought contests in New York Democratic strongholds, alone.
* Virtually ending Spitzer's political ambitions and his chances to be taken seriously as a presidential candidate.
* Putting Republicans in the driver's seat of a jet-propelled issue that nearly all Americans agree on----stopping the illegal alien invasion.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
This isn't rocket science. I'm sure any honest politician could describe his (or her) position on giving driver's licenses to illegal aliens in under 30 seconds. I can do it in one second--NO!
exactly what reform would that be?
More $$ for teachers is my guess.
She put her foot in it, big time. This is going to cling to her like clay to hiking boots, making it harder and harder for her to move forward. She has ended up with several pounds on each boot. There is also an argument to be made that had the Internet, bloggers, new media, talk radio been around in full swing the first time Bill Clinton ran, he never could have been elected.
How about Hillary waterboarded on a sea of taco sauce? That sounds like a pay per view event.
“Former President Clinton on Monday compared Republican criticism of his wife’s position on driver’s license for illegal immigrants to the ads that helped sink John Kerry’s White House hopes in 2004.”
This is why Bill Clinton is such a great liar, ahem, politician, and such a bad leader.
Note the multiple lies at work here:
- Hillary flubbed it and everybody knows it, even her own campaign
- John Edwards attacked his wife in an ad, is Edwards a Republican?
- This has nothing to do with a far-ago event or facts that are in dispute, this is simply “what does Hillary believe?”
- Hillary isnt even running against Republicans - yet - sniping has been low-level
- And since when is disagreeing with a position a character attack?
So his comparison is lame and about as wrong as possible. The only reason to bing it up now is to get the kneejerk librals to rally to Hillary’s defense, as ‘swiftboat’ is now a liberal lexicon word akin to ‘mccarthyism’ (I’m sure Clinton would have called it mccarthyism if that word had bite).
Clinton, as usual, is a master at misdirection. And a master at making any criticism of his wife seem out-of-bounds.
Why isnt the press openly mocking his absurd position? Oh, of course, they are rooting from him and her.
“* Helped guarantee blowout GOP wins in hotly fought contests in New York Democratic strongholds, alone.”
- This happened already, or is it a prediction?
“don’t you dare...”? He’s getting on my nerves.
As if the REPUBLICANS launched this.
Such victims. Boohoohoo.
I'm game---you can go first seeing it's your idea.
They are catering to the mind-numbed voter.....again.
The Swift Boat Veterans told the truth about John Kerry, and he never, ever, rebutted it by signing his Form 180 so his actual military records would be made available to the press and public. Clinton (him) assumes -- and expects his audience to agree -- that "swiftboating" is a dishonest attack.
The truth about Hillary and illegal immigrants is parallel to the truth about John Kerry's military career. Truth is deadly to her today, like truth was deadly to Kerry then. So Bill has to lie about those who are criticizing Hillary as well as lie about what she is saying, in order to mount this "defense."
So, this article contains, inadvertently, three reasons why Hillary should never again get into the White House without a Visitor's Pass. 1) You get Hillary's stupidity. 2) You get overrun with illegal immigrants. 3) You get Bill's dishonesty, again.
Congressman Billybob
Considering how successful the swift boating truth outing was, I am not sure Bubba really wanted to make that analogy. Maybe he is manifesting defeat for his “better” half.
So will his high fee lecture circuit fawning lefties tour end if she is elected???
Awwwww. Poor widdle Hillary.
She can’t make it on her own. Bubba has to come to her rescue -— again.
She’s finding that playing with the big boys might get a tad rough, so she tries to play both the Victim Card and Fem Card.
The DNC should be in emergency session, re-evaluating her candidacy. If this is the extent of her strength as a candidate, the Dem Party could see itself in big trouble next November.
Nice analogy.
Glad you liked it.
I swear, I'm all broke up about it (sob).
The Swift Boat Veterans told the truth about Kerry and it sunk him.
Telling the truth about Hillary’s (and Sphincter’s) attempt to add illegal aliens to the dhimmicratic voter roles will sink her.
The truth will set you free, but Slick Willie can’t handle the truth!
