Car Crash Claims Wounded Iraq Veteran's Third Child

DALLAS -- A wounded Iraq veteran and his wife have lost a third child from injuries the boy suffered in a car accident on the way to visit his father in the hospital.

Three weeks after his siblings died in an Oct. 13 accident on the gusty West Texas plains, 9-year-old Tyler Johnson died Saturday at Children's Medical Center Dallas.

Army Spc. John Austin Johnson was waiting for his wife, Lisa, and their three kids to visit him at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio when the deadly crash occurred on Interstate 10 about 12 miles east of Ozona.

Lisa Johnson overcorrected the steering in her sport utility vehicle after encountering a blast of wind on the drive from El Paso, causing the car to roll at least four times, officials have said.

The couple's youngest children, 2-year-old Logan and 5-year-old Ashley, died at the scene. Tyler Johnson suffered massive head injuries.

Lisa Johnson was driving at the speed limit, traffic investigators have said, but they blamed the accident on a combination of high speed, drowsiness and powerful winds.

The three children were in the back seat. Logan was in a child seat, but the other two children were not wearing seatbelts.

Sgt. 1st Class Eugene Schmidt, a family spokesman, said Tyler survived longer than expected.

Family Was On Way To Brooke Army Medical Center

Johnson, who is stationed at Fort Bliss, has survived five brushes with improvised explosive device blasts during two years in Iraq, Schmidt said last month. The latest left him with a traumatic brain injury, and he speaks with a severe stutter.

“I saw a young mother in tenderness bend
O’er the couch of her slumbering boy;
She kissed the soft lips as they murmured her name,
While the dreamer lay smiling in joy.

“O sweet as the rosebud encircled with dew
When its fragrance is flung on the air,
So fresh and so bright to that mother he seemed
As he lay in his innocence there.

“I saw her again as she gazed on his form,
Pale as marble and silent and cold;
But paler and colder her beautiful boy
And the tale of her sorrow was told.

“But the Healer was there who had stricken her heart
And taken her treasure away;
To allure her to Heaven He had placed it on high,
And the mourner will sweetly obey.

“There had whispered a voice - ‘twas the voice of her God: I love thee! I love thee! Pass under the rod.” ~ Mrs. M.S. Dana

Dear one in Christ, the trial of your faith is far more precious than gold, and what seems the darkest mystery of God’s workings now will turn out to be the brightest blessing of His love! ~ H.G.B. for “Our Daily Bread”

Prayers for these shattered parents.

Tyler’s will to live surprised even his doctors.

“People would ask me what’s going on, and I’d always tell them the doctors weren’t sure he’d make the night,” said Sgt. 1st Class Eugene Schmidt, a family spokesman.

Spc. and Mrs. Johnson have said they are too devastated to talk, but Sgt. Schmidt said they are coping fairly well given the circumstances.

“I think the good thing is they knew it [Tyler’s death] was coming.

“They had time to prepare for it this time,” said Sgt. Schmidt, who had been taking care of Spc. Johnson at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.

“I think they’re just so rooted in their faith. That’s what’s helping them through it.”

Sgt. Schmidt said he is inspired by the Johnsons’ will to overcome such unimaginable tragedy.

“It’s amazing to me how strong they can be,” he said. “No matter how bad it can be, they just take it one day and one hour at a time.”

FirstLight Federal Credit Union Opens Account For Wounded Soldier And Family

The First Light Credit Union has deposited $10,000 into the account.

For more information on how to donate money, you can call 1-800-351-1670.

For the past three weeks, an outpouring of support has flooded in from military-support groups, businesses and strangers.

The Professional Golfers’ Association heard about the family’s story and raised $95,000, which paid for a new car and other expenses.

American Airlines, which donated plane tickets for family members to travel to Logan and Ashley’s funeral in Arkansas last month, is donating more tickets for Tyler’s funeral in Arkansas this week.

Almost everything else – from car rentals and hotel accommodations to food – has been donated.

Mrs. Johnson, who was a homemaker, now says she can’t stand being in an empty home, Sgt. Schmidt said.

“She was telling me she’s going to have to get a job because she won’t be able to be at home alone when she’s normally taking care of them,” Sgt. Schmidt said.

Despite his own brush with death in Iraq, Spc. Johnson wants to return to active duty, Sgt. Schmidt said. But Mrs. Johnson is petrified of losing her husband in addition to all their children.

This is the most tragic thing I’ve ever read. My heart breaks for them. May God comfort them, and may He give them strength for the difficult days ahead. They’re really going to need it.

Prayers for this family. I can't imagine the grief they must be going through. What a gut wrencher.

Only someone as devoted to supporting illegal aliens and open borders would post a comment such as yours when an Iraqi veteran’s three children have been killed. You are sick!
