SEN. Hillary Rodham Clinton apparently has hit a speed bump on the way to her coronation.
If Mrs. Clinton is to prevail in the general election she must, as in the primaries, divide to rule. She may get help from petulant conservatives. The polls make it clear that Mr. Giuliani is the Republican most likely to beat Mrs. Clinton. But his nomination could spark three splinter candidacies on the right.
The first could be by a pro-life candidate who is offended by Mr. Giuliani's pro-choice views on abortion. This would be a clear case of cutting off one's nose to spite one's face. The issue of abortion will be settled in the courts. The next president likely will appoint two, and perhaps as many as four, Supreme Court justices. Mr. Giuliani has said he'll appoint judges like Chief Justice John Roberts and Samuel Alito. Mrs. Clinton will appoint judges who will make sure Roe vs. Wade is the law of the land forever.
The second could be an immigration restrictionist. Mr. Giuliani might be the strongest of the Republicans on border security, but his views about illegals who just came here to work are too kind for some.
The third - and the most likely - is that Ron Paul will run on the Libertarian ticket. This should help Republicans, because most of the votes Mr. Paul likely would get would come from moonbats apoplectic about recent successes in Iraq. They are angry with Mrs. Clinton for suggesting she wouldn't withdraw all troops immediately upon taking the oath of office.
A Paul candidacy excepted, the arithmetic of the 2008 election is clear. In a two-candidate race, the Republican wins, especially if the Republican is named Giuliani. In a multiple candidate race, Mrs. Clinton wins.

Exactly. I am shocked that he is even leading in national polls - as useless as they are at this stage.
I’m with you and many others on this. Rudy should not be allowed to re-define the conservative movement.
Bingo
Still shilling for the pro-abortionist? ROFL. Rudy will never become the nominee and if he is, that's the day I sever all ties to all Republicans.
Romney is Rooty lite. Nothing more and will lose by as wide a margin.
Fred wont run on any second fiddle ticket so you can forget about that. He said so and he means it.
Rooty and Romney are both anti-gun. There are 100 million gun owners that will never vote for either one.
If you really, really, want to lose, either one can get the job done!
Rudy would completely destroy it, not redefine it.
You better put your glasses on. I didn’t say that. I was agreeing with another poster in saying we must defeat Rudy in the primary.
Duncan Hunter is my candidate, btw.
That was my FNC version. You’re Right.
Run the corridor through Alaska to Siberia and you will finally have what the Founding Fathers intended.
We need runoff elections, bad.
Romney is not anti-gun. Rudy is the one among the GOP candidates who is anti gun and pro abortion and - along with Huckabee - pro amnesty and thus weak on WOT. If Rudy gets nominated, there will be a third party. Pro-life people will never vote for him. Those wanting our borders protected - and that includes many independents and - will not bother to vote.
Rudy is the one who can defeat Hillary. I don’t understand why any of you would rather have Hillary than Rudy. Ron Paul is not going to be President of anything. Same for Duncan Hunter, Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney. Do you not remember that we had 8 years of Clinton thanks to that knucklehead in Dallas. Lets not do it again.
It’s simple. Rudy is not the only one that beat Hillary and we don’t want another RINO especially as President.
What we don’t understand is why people who want change will vote the same old shame old into office.
Same ones that predicted John Kerry for President?
Primaries are supposed to be some kind of runoff.
You know, this part stumps me as well:
“This should help Republicans, because most of the votes Mr. Paul likely would get would come from moonbats apoplectic about recent successes in Iraq.”
I guess what he means is that Rudy would on the ticket, which would alienate conservatives, but Hillary would take a hit from the anti-war cause from Ron Paul, since he’s to the left of even her on that issue. Divide and conquer.
IF you KNOW it's gonna spite ones face..... WHY DO IT????
Rudy should be retroactively aborted. He's all for it! It's ok with him.
In the 2nd debate Romney said he supports an assult weapons ban. That is anti-gun and you can’t spin his crap to mean anything else!
That alone will sink both of those turds.
Rudy is our only chance.
If Rudy is the nominee...you are not voting?
You are SOOOO right!
