HUNTER CALLS ON ROMNEY TO OPPOSE BAIN PARTNERSHIP WITH CHINESE COMPANY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 2, 2007

San Diego, CA - - - Presidential candidate and current Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, Congressman Duncan Hunter, today called on former Governor Mitt Romney to send a "clear statement" to the leadership of the company he founded, Bain Capital, to terminate a proposed business deal with a controversial Chinese corporation seeking to acquire U.S. defense contractor 3COM. Bain Capital is attempting to form a business arrangement with Huawei Corporation, a Chinese corporation founded by an officer of the Peoples Liberation Army of Communist China, which faces allegations of assisting Saddam Hussein in the targeting of U.S. aircraft and in helping the Taliban develop surveillance equipment.
"I am extremely concerned that Governor Romney's company would tout a highly suspect Chinese corporation as a strategic partner," stated Hunter. "Forming a business partnership with a corporation known to have direct ties with terrorists and dictators while, at the same time, openly seeking to acquire a major U.S. corporation that performs vital cyber security work for the Department of Defense, can only be characterized as irresponsible."
A resolution has been introduced in Congress, H.Res. 730, which states; "The preponderance of publicly available evidence clearly suggests that as currently structured, the proposed transaction involving Huawei threatens the national security of the United States and should not be approved by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States ." A copy of this resolution is provided.
Hunter stated in his letter to Governor Romney, " while it is true that you no longer control Bain Capital, the contributions you have received from its principals as its founding member indicate that your influence within the company remains strong.
"Further, while the Committee on Foreign Investment has yet to rule on the Huawei transaction, this corporation's connection to Saddam Hussein, the Taliban and the Army of Communist China should clearly disqualify them from becoming, in the words of your former company, "a strategic partner" in acquiring a U.S. firm such as 3COM, which performs vital cyber-security work for the U.S. Department of Defense.
"This letter is a request that you immediately issue a statement of policy that this transaction should be terminated on the grounds of national security. Please let me know what you intend to do."
A copy of Congressman Hunter's letter, as well as two articles regarding Huawei acquisition efforts are provided. Media are encouraged to contact Gary Becks at (619) 334-1655 for additional information or to arrange an interview with Hunter.

'Economic Patriotism' is a crucial defining issue, and Romney's still leading, I think, in polls of Iowa and NewHampshire, thus arguably the leading "conservative" in the race.
If this issue gets news coverage, and/or if the Hunter campaign leads with it in what will have to be very cost-effective television ad barrages, it will serve Hunter's campaign very well.
Because conservatives are hypocrites. They sat on their asses waiting for Fred! to arrive on his white horse when the real Reagan Republican was already in the race.
Also Hunter has ran an obsolete campaign. He's got to have a strong message that reasonates across the board like Paul does. Hunter opposes gambling, for crying out loud. How the Hell is that supposed to get you support?
fair enough.. if you consider responding harshly to being called a liar “pissing and moaning” than we obviously don’t share the same definition of the term..
I think Hunter was using this deal to draw attention to the fact that Romney is part of the same problem as Hillary, although perhaps less overtly treasonous.
If Hunter's campaign is "obsolete," it's only in the sense that modern American society has become so decadent that a man of virtue, honor, and decency is considered passe. It's tragic that so many people, even on FR, are following the "horse race" between unprincipled egotists like Rudy, Romney, etc., rather than getting behind the real conservative, Hunter.
As for Hillary having less of a problem with Chinese influence that Bill, I think that's ludicrous. She's awash in laundered Chinese campaign money. Yes, it's true that the corporate interests are funnelling her money also, but that's because they are (as another poster here put it) whores, without a shred of patriotism. They are only concerned about the short-term profit picture. It could be argued that a looming Chinese military threat is "good for business" (in the short term), from the standpoint of defense contractors.
We will not give up on Hunter, rest assured. It seems to me you, and your fellow comrades have a much better prospective of just who we SHOULD support, than most, and if I weren’t already a Hunter supporter, I would tend to listen to those who know best.
Gidget7,
Thanks for you kind words, it is an honor to serve.
TOWARD VICTORY
We love you David! All of you!

Very nice. Duncan Hunter is our canary in he mine. This country better start paying attention to what we're willing to sacrifice for PC globalism.
Indeed it does. It proves Hunter wouldn't go along with their bribes, like many did. Maybe that's the kind of guy they're looking for....one they can more easily influence.
Of course it is also political...Hunter, in addition to being on the committee, is running for President. I believe, in this instance though, that it is also appropriate to ask the other cadidates running for President (because, after all, the POTUS does have a valid say and interest in this) to take a stand against this deal if the things stated about it have the remotest chance of being true.
Someone spending a few dollars on lottery tickets or going to play BINGO is none of Hunter's concern and I doubt that the vast majority (like me) who do gamble don't have any problems.
He's not some libertarian extremist, who thinks that dogma trumps historical experience about human societies and the fate of nations.
I don't want him to be a libertarian extremist. But certainly he needs to read a book on federalism instead of being Huckabee lite.
If Hunter's campaign is "obsolete," it's only in the sense that modern American society has become so decadent that a man of virtue, honor, and decency is considered passe.
No, it just means Hunter tried to run a traditional campaign, thinking that the liberal media would give him interviews all the time, especially to a Congressman.
It's tragic that so many people, even on FR, are following the "horse race" between unprincipled egotists like Rudy, Romney, etc., rather than getting behind the real conservative, Hunter.
I agree, and I said that most conservatives are hypocrites for ignoring Hunter on the fallacy that he couldn't "win" but will wait out in the pumpkin patch for Fred! to arrive like Linus. If I wasn't such a free-market libertarian I would've been out there supporting Hunter since Day One.
“If this issue gets news coverage, and/or if the Hunter campaign leads with it in what will have to be very cost-effective television ad barrages, it will serve Hunter’s campaign very well.”
I hope our FReepers from Iowa or NH, who support Hunter, will write an editor’s letter, and/or call one of the local talk shows.
Hunter doesn’t have the kind of personal $$ that Romney has so needs all the grassroots support he can get from us.
Re post 80, 1st link, no wonder Romney keeps saying he wants a partnership with Communist China.
As a 3COM shareholder, I see nothing wrong with this deal, for 3COM, for investors, or for America.
having a Chinese company being a minority shareholder in a venture doesn’t change laws or their access to technology, any more than if you went out and bought shares in a Shanghai stock exchange company - would you have chinese technology? Chinese businesses will not get access to anything additional through this transaction that they cant get in other ways by simply buying it.
