Duane "Dog" Chapman's tape-recorded tirade has cost him his TV show.

"Dog the Bounty Hunter" has been pulled off the air by A&E, the cable network announced Friday. The network stopped short of saying the show was canceled, apparently leaving open the possibility of a return with new episodes or reruns.

"In evaluating the circumstances of the last few days, A&E has decided to take Dog The Bounty Hunter off the network's schedule for the foreseeable future," A&E said in prepared statement. "We hope that Mr. Chapman continues the healing process that he has begun."

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Yum Brands, which advertised Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut on "Dog the Bounty Hunter," had pulled all of its ads, calling Chapman's comments "despicable."

Production of the Hawaii-based reality show was suspended earlier this week after it was reported that Chapman made repeated racial slurs in a tape-recorded phone conversation with his son, Tucker.

"Dog the Bounty Hunter" went on the air in 2004 and was one of A&E's highest rated shows, averaging 1.2 million viewers in primetime.

Chapman, who owns Da Kine Bail Bonds in downtown Honolulu, has apologized for repeatedly using a racial slur to refer to his son's girlfriend, who is African American.

The Associated Press reported on Friday that Tucker Chapman taped the phone call with his father, and sold it to the National Enquirer, which posted the tape on its Web site on Wednesday.

He claims it wasn’t the color but the character of this young ‘lady’.

Did you listen to the tape? If you did, you might find the answer to that question for yourself.

Bounty hunting has a long a useful history, which is why bounty hunters have special privileges that even police don’t enjoy. The right to enter private property without a warrant, for example. Notice that the Dog often doesn’t always excercise that right, and is usually respectful to the property owners, even though he doesn’t need to be.

Yes, he IS working for himself. You say that in a derogatory way, please explain yourself to all of us here a FR who also work for ourselves.

Also explain how he interferes with police work. All the information I’ve seen says the opposite.

So because rappers use that term, all blacks should accept being called that term?

All blacks were not being referred to here. My point is that if you find the word to be offensive, be offended when ANYONE uses it. Don't accept being referred to by that term by anyone

I know it’s hard to believe, but not all black people use racial slurs, or accept being called the n-word by anyone, white or black

It's not hard to believe at all. There is a ghetto sub-culture that uses the word with regularity. This sub-culture does NOT represent the larger black community.

You absolutely have the right to call me the n-word if you insist upon it,

My vocabulary is extensive enough that I don't need to refer to anyone with this term

but I too have the right to not associate with you as a result, or to use my own freedom of speech to condemn you to others. With rights comes the resposibility to accept the consequences of one’s actions or words.

I am in absolute agreement.

"Good riddance to all WHITE dogs out there who use racially charged language."

There, fixed it for you. Where is all your righteous indignation regarding Delaware U? Not surprisingly, not ONE poster on this thread who thinks Duane should pay for the rest of his life for uttering ONE WORD in private has had JACK to say on the "Delaware U - All whites are racist" threads. Nothing! You guys are still fuming cause you got your asses handed to you over the Duke LAX and Jena 6 deals where you came out and blamed whitey first.

Never even heard of it.

On Duke LaCrosse, I recall saying they should be punished if they were guilty on the first reports. When it became clear they were framed, I called for the D.A. to be prosecuted like everybody else did and I'm glad they prosecuted him for wrongful prosecution and took his law license. Nifong needed prison time for what he tried to do.

On Jena, I know I said that that I didn't think fifty years in prison was a sensible punishment for simple assault. And it isn't. However, they shouldn't be let off the hook the way they were either. I thought they should spend a few years in a jail or, better, a boot camp for young offenders.

Your post has an extended life. All to the good. I have had an interesting time reading the contributions to it. As usual, I should have carefully considered my post #190. I had been somewhat supportive of Chris Rock. I missed the point that Mr Rock uses derogatory words about certain persons- mainly his own people.

I presume the point is that theoretically the likes of "Big" Al- a gangster- whoops sorry, er' Al Sharpton, should have chided Mr Rock. I wonder what Sharpton's take is on the use of that unfortunate word in comedy.? Certainly Mr Rock knows his audience and his timing is superb.

Again what sets the race baiters off and indeed the tail waggers (watch THAT word buddy),is a direct personal reference. Food for thought though for the knee jerk network censoring Dog,is this.

A Mr Imus bit the dust and he sued the pants of 'em. He collected. LOL

Not free from repurcussions, nor should it be. Merely or allegedly free from government interference.

Jesus says what comes out of the mouth reveals what's in the heart......

Thanks for not answering my question with such a pithy statement. It does save time. Some people go on and on without answering the question. You did it in just one sentence.

When private conversations between a father and son become subject to veto by the language police, it's already too late.

I hope the kid loses his job. Even if the dad ranted about the girlfriend the son shouldn’t have taped the phone conversation nor sold it.

Yawn. I'll leave it to the likes of you to defend the Dog using racially charged terms to refer to his own future daughter-in-law.

Dog has spent many years hunting down hard-core scum. Perhaps he notices some qualities in his son's girlfriend that would indicate she's not a good person for his son to marry.

And yes, perhaps years of noticing certain racial breakdowns of the kind of scum he needs to hunt down has made him prejudiced in that area

Fine. Then he should have sat down and figured out how to have that conversation without including language that is racial. If the kid was rebellious to begin with, anyone should know that would just make him go even further with her. So it was stupid on two counts, not one.

And yes, perhaps years of noticing certain racial breakdowns of the kind of scum he needs to hunt down has made him prejudiced in that area

That's not a good excuse in the 21st century. In fact, it never really was. Let's leave that kind of talk to Sheets Byrd.

This was a PRIVATE conversation.

Private? Dog should have kept his racist thoughts to himself if he wanted them to remain private.

If you are having private conversations with yourself, that might be a sign of more profound problems.

The rule in my house has always been "What is said here stays here".

YMMV

The guy got angry and said something he shouldn’t have. In private. Nothing he’s done in his public life indicates that he hates people of different races. You act as if we should just take it as a given in the 21st century that our speech is going to be monitored, and should adjust our thoughts accordingly. That’s in the hopes we won’t slip up in a moment of anger and say something that’s anti-zeitgeist.

It’s chilling and it’s Orwellian.

Byrd was saying the word could be applied to blacks or whites. It was color neutral. Seems as though he has a point, definition 2 maybe, but most accept definition 1 as a derogatory reference to blacks.

Funny to me is the firing of a DC city controller for using the perfectly good word "niggardly" because he wasn't "sensitive" enough to avoid the use of a sound alike word. I suppose using the word niggard to describe someone would be enough to get one fired these days. Don't try to be cute!

No, I'm not. But any celeb should have figured this out by now. Look at Mel Brooks with his antisemitic outburst, Tom Cruise backflipping off Oprah's couch, etc.

Nothing is private if you're a celeb. If you have a black sheep, expect them to sell you out to the scandal sheets. Repeatedly. Even Reagan's kids did it.

It’s chilling and it’s Orwellian.

I'm pretty much a civil libertarian in the old sense of the word. But I think I'll decline on defending some sleazy celeb calling his son's girlfriend a 'n*gger' or a 'ho' or whatever he called her.

There are plenty more assaults on constitutional rights every day than this sad little crapfest. But go ahead and defend him. Imagine yourself to be the last knight of the Old Republic, valiantly struggling to defend what remains of the First.

Oh, that's right. No one is talking about putting him in jail, are they? You just can't appear on a liberal network like A&E if you are caught using racial slurs.
