Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman said Thursday he's backing Rudy Giuliani for president, throwing his support behind a fellow moderate Republican and former mayor.
"The shared vision as mayor of getting things done, tied in with his strong stance on security, Rudy gets that," Coleman told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Thursday. "So you tie those two together and it's a pretty powerful combination."
Coleman also called Giuliani "ultimately electable," a pitch that Giuliani has made throughout the campaign.
The two men got to know each other when Coleman was mayor of St. Paul, Minn., and Giuliani was mayor of New York, and they have a lot in common. Both are natives of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. Both are former prosecutors. And both are former Democrats.
"We have similar records -- making cities safer, creating jobs, lowering taxes," Coleman said, adding he's known Giuliani for 13 years.
Coleman said he didn't know how much the endorsement would help, but noted that Minnesota will be in play in next year's campaign.
"I represent the pragmatic wing of the Republican Party, getting things done," he said.
Coleman is trying to improve his standing with swing voters in the run-up to a tough re-election campaign next year.
He said he would not consider serving as Giuliani's running mate.
The state's Republican governor, Tim Pawlenty, is a national co-chairman of Arizona Senator John McCain's presidential campaign.
In all fairness, each is probably the best person their hopelessly liberal constituents could elect. Coleman in particular is a huge improvement over his predecessor. But I hardly see why this is news.
Norm Coleman said Thursday he's backing Rudy Giuliani for president, throwing his support behind a fellow moderate ... And both are former Democrats.'Former'??
It's kinda funny how Rudy Giuliani has been pushed as some kind of "tough on terrorism" candidate, and yet this endorsement comes from the same guy who made news earlier this year for being one of the few Republicans to oppose the so-called "troop surge" in Iraq.
Aside from that, we have had a number of better Senators than Coleman: Rod Graham as one example. He was sandbagged though and the RNC left him to twist in the wind as the Rats targetted him relentlessly, and a nothing Mark Dayton was able to win the seat.
We can do better. It is not just the State...but the Bush team and RNC which has been interfering and screwing up the State.
They tried to foist Mark Kennedy off on us, after he revealed his true colors on countless bills as just another globalist and a lackey for the Bush RINOs. He wouldn't even defend any of his positions at our State Convention, he just talked for five minutes, and ignored the issues he had already been challenged on by a solid anti-communist opponent.
His Bush Croneyism and his anti-Middle Class elitism then led him to lose to a complete nothing even worse than Mark Dayton had been. His complete failure to articulate real conservative positions combatively to counter the standard collectivist redistributionist DFL line was embarassing. It was like we had Bush himself running for the seat...almost apologizing for not being more liberal.
Sigh.
Nothing to see here, just another Republican digging the GOP’s grave by supporting a pro-abortionist. Let’s move along and bash Paul for being a kook simply for supporting the principles that Republicans are supposed to support.
....and please tell me why any voters would care who Norm Coleman endorses
Would a RINO take the UN to task over Oil for food? Would a RINO get a 0 rating from NARAL? Would a RINO vote yes on a Constitutional ban on flag desecration....vote yes on constitutional ban of same-sex marriage? Would a RINO get a 45% rating from the NEA? would a RINO vote yes on prohibiting lawsuits against gun manufacturers? Would a RINO vote yes on $40B in reduced federal overall spending?
Would a RINO vote against the Law of The Sea Treaty?
For way too many people around here RINO means a politician who dose something, anything that I don’t like.
As I noted, he may be the best Minnesota can get. I just don't think it is news that he would back another New Yorker.
Just way to much of the use of the word RINO around here.
