New Mexico's political scene continues its upheaval after Sen. Pete Domenici's announcement that he plans to retire at the end of his term.
Rep. Tom Udall's office confirmed to Action 7 News Political Reporter Matt Grubs this afternoon that the Northern New Mexico Democrat might run.
"New Mexicans have urged Tom Udall to reconsider running for the United States Senate and he's doing just that," said Udall spokesperson Marissa Padilla.
If Udall decides on a senatorial run, he would face several Democrats who have already declared their candidacy.
The most-recognized name among them is Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez.
Should Udall enter the race, all three congressional seats in the state would be up for grabs in 2008.
Udall had previously said he planned to stay in the House of Representatives and concentrate on the newfound influence of his seat on the House Appropriations Committee.

He has the lying, forked-tongue, partisan, conniving hypocrisy down. He’ll fit right in with the rest of the leftist criminals, maybe even teach them a trick or two.
*ping*
Udall is a left-wing, knee-jerk environmentalist radical who is actually further to the left of the current Democrat Senator Jeff Bingaman.
His big pluses are his history as a former state attorney-general, Dim representative for District 3 (which was Bill Richardson’s seat), and the Udall name (he is the son of former Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall, nephew of deceased Congressman Morris Udall, and cousin of Colorado Congressman Mark Udall and Oregon Senator Gordon Smith).
He won re-election in 2006 with 75% of the vote in the heavily Hispanic and Native-American district. If he got into the race he would be a heavy favorite to win.
Smith and Udall are related? That might explain his recent rinoish behavior.
Tom is a partisan flip-flopper. As Attorney General he gave King one decision on Indian gaming, telling King that he was responsible for making compacts with the tribes, and as soon as Gary Johnson acted on Tom’s decision, Tom changed his mind, saying it was the responsibility of the legislature. It was pure politics, and it ended up costing New Mexicans a pretty penny. I dread the thought of him getting a lock on that Senate seat.
Udall is the cousin of Oregons RINO senator Gordon Smith.
This is bad news. Hopefully, he’ll have to fight his way through a tough primary, as his Republican opponent will have to.
It’s even more scary knowing he’s been my representative in Congress for the past eight years. Met him once, seemed like a nice gentleman, but really it was more like a wolf in sheep’s clothing...
